Work-Study Program at Boston University

For current undergrad students or anyone else who knows anything about the work study program at BU, can you give me some information about the program? Such as the kind off work you do, the amount of hours you can work a week, the salary, etc.

Thanks

My son worked in the work study program last year. He worked two days a week in the Library, about 10 hours a week. The pay was decent, I think about $9 an hour. The only bad thing was about a week before he reached his limit of $1000, his boss abruptly told him that they would not keep him on & he lost his position. He was told that it would cost the university more to keep him on after his work study was exhausted.
This year he was awarded $2000 in work study, but chose not to accept it. Instead he has a regular job at the dining hall. Seems like in this case he can keep working there all year, & it doesn’t matter how much he makes as he is not restricted by any limit.

I worked in one of the smaller libraries on campus doing periodicals and cataloging. I made about $11 per hour (which is a bit higher than most work-study jobs) and set my own schedule, usually 10 hours per week but extremely flexible. My supervisor always just put me on the library payroll whenever my work-study award ran out so I could keep working. It was a pretty awesome gig, actually. Very little supervision and plenty of interesting reading material. Learned a few useful skills there too.

I don’t know why I didn’t get a work-study in freshmen year, but sophomore year, I got one and I e-mailed one of the dining halls ($9.25/hr). While I love cooking (students don’t do much cooking, but light prep is expected and you might end up on the grill which just involves placing the burger on the grill and flipping it), food service was just long and tiring. I worked the full year (and a bit in the summer as well), but I would feel very sleepy and have a sore body. Sometimes I felt obligated to cover somebody’s shifts including late night cafe (for those studious students or people running from crazy parties/ case of the munchies) which would run till 3:00 am. The good thing is that dining hall position are easy to get and the managers will almost always let you stay after your balance runs out.

Now in my junior year, I work with the College of Engineering IT. You can try applying there. We have one girl who is an English Lit major, so you don’t have to be an engineering major/computer science major. I really like working there (well love-hate relationship really, but you have to have worked in IT to know what it feels like). We have a dog in the office and hours are really flexible. The supervisors are funny and laid back. Pay is $10.25/hr. We set up machines for the computer labs by putting software/occasionally hardware and we also have to walk over to professors’ offices or classrooms if there is some sort of issue.

What will happen when you get the W-S amount, you will have an option on the BU StudentLink to see available positions. You can always ask the managers if you can stay on if your balance runs out.
