So at the beginning of the summer I found a job working at a school cafeteria union. I assumed I had work study because I had it the last two years but I checked today and for some reason I didn't get any (put on FAFSA I wanted them). I'm going to call the school to ask them to give it to me but in case I don't get it, do you think I will be able to still work? on the application it didn't state I NEEDED work study but they asked me if I had it during the interview and I said yeah.

Depending on the school, sometimes they need student workers so badly that you can work even if you are not a “work study” student, although work study kids might have first priority for hiring. Check with your school. You would also be paid with institutional funds rather than federal work study money, but the student doesn’t usually care where the money comes from, that is just a concern for the school!

Really only the person in charge of the job can tell you. If it is a job that requires WS, then you will probably not be able to do it without WS. If it does not, you should be o.k.

My daughter’s school has a lot of jobs that require WS. A student that does not have WS can not get those particular jobs. It comes down to the department budgets. WS is largely funded by the govt (66-75% I believe), so is a big money saver for a department that has a limited budget.

My D got a scholarship midway through the first year and they fired her from her WS job. She found another one that didn’t require WS eligibility. I would check with the employer just to be sure.
