Ok, I am a little confused about work study. I am starting school very soon, and in my financial aid package I was awarded work study where I can earn about $100 a week. Now I know that taxes are taken out of this, but my question is can I earn the $100 dollars before taxes are taken out or is this after? Because if I can only earn the money before taxes, I wont really be earning that much money or the amount the award allows. Im just really confused about it.

Thanks for any help!

i dont think there are taxes involved in workstudy. its a grant that you have to work for. so if your grant is lets say 2000. uncle sam cant say that you need to pay taxes on ur "grant" it wudnt make sense

In the experiences of two of my sons, the social security/medicare taxes are not withheld from work/study earnings. Income taxes might be, depending on how you fill out the W-4 form. But if you paid no income taxes last year, and don't expect to this year, you can claim exempt on the W-4 and no income taxes should be withheld. That applies to Federal taxes, there may still be state or local income taxes withheld.
