Work Study Waitlist

What is the probability of me getting off of the waitlist for work study? If I don’t get off of the waitlist, what are some on-campus jobs I should seek out? (I’m a sophomore majoring in spec ed, if that helps.)

I don’t know what the chances are of getting off the WL for WS.

On campus jobs that aren’t WS sometimes require a talent, such as tutoring, life guard, etc.

Don’t know if the Starbucks jobs are WS or not.

Contact the tutoring center and see if they’re hiring.

I don’t know how the Federal Work Study waitlist is prioritized, but my guess is that it would be prioritized by ones EFC, though UA could have other criteria.

It is possible that you were put on the waitlist in error and will get a Federal Work Study award.

UA does not have any Work Study positions in 3rd party-managed foodservice, eg Starbucks, the dining halls, etc.

A lot of UA students work at Publix or other businesses that are just off campus. However, a lot of jobs will be filled by upperclassmen who have more flexible schedules and who are in Tuscaloosa on weekends and during break periods.

Note that many people recommend that freshmen do not work during their first semester on campus unless they really need the money so that they will have more time to acclimate to college life.

Thank you, mom2collegekids and SEA_tide. I hope the waitlist is prioritized by EFC. I am not a freshman. I worked 15 hours a week with my work study job as a freshman. I am a sophomore now.

Definitely contact someone at financial aid who works for UA (the people who answer the phone are located in Atlanta). There was an issue last year when many upperclassmen, myself included, were put on the waitlist in error and did end up getting Federal Work Study awards as was supposed to happen in the beginning.

Although I agree, that you should check into the work study jobs’ availability for yourself. Be proactive and start looking for jobs both on and off campus.

This advice and info would apply to all students:
You could try Publix or some other local stores that are a walkable distance. If you have a car on campus, you could try retail stores at the mall or a restaurant position.

Here is some info on jobs at UA

Other ideas:
Ask professors, and other people you know about any job opportunities.
Do you have a talent or special skill that you could offer for a wage?
-be creative and see what you can come up with.

If you are looking outside the university, have a resume and references available for your prospective employer.

Good luck with your job search!

Be aware that any restaurant type jobs will require you to work on homegame days because of increased business on those days.

SEA_tide, I already called the financial aid office. The lady I spoke to said she would put me on the waitlist.

Thank you, robotbldmom. My resume, cover letter, and references page are all updated. I’ve applied to a few jobs from studentjobs.ua.edu. I do not own a car. I didn’t think of asking professors about available jobs. I’ll get on that!

Thanks for the reminder, mom2collegekids. Unfortunately, at this point, even though I’ve already bought my football tickets, I have to take what I can get, even if that means working on game days. I really need a job.

Your welcome
The last jobs to be taken are the ones that require you to work on game days. I recall that they are usually looking for students to direct traffic for parking on game days. It is a outdoor job but nevertheless, a job.

Also, there are a lot of small shops that might require someone to cashier or stock. It is really not too far to walk to downtown.
