work study

Can someone please explain work study to me. I thought it was reserved for a student that received financial aid or family's income was limited. My sophmore daughter is having a difficult time finding a job on campus not limited to work study students. She has two friends who get work study yet do not qualify for any financial assistance. Thanks

work-study is a part of the financial aid package you receive. You can tell in your financial aid section on MyNEU if you’ve been awarded it.

A lot of people get angry about the work study process. I have a bunch of friends who got work study, but who aren’t using any loans to pay for school- and who got the same merit scholarship as me. And yet I didn’t get work study and am covered in loans.

She should try to get a job off-campus, if her schedule allows it. The hours are usually more flexible (because you work evenings and weekends), and you could keep working after the semester ends without having to deal with any re-registering stuff with school employment.

thanks I will pass the info on to my daughter.

My son is a sophomore who received work study as part of his financial aid package. He has applied for a number of jobs, but has been told in each case that the hiring process is complete and the position has been filled. Is there a great deal of competition for a limited number of work study jobs? Does the job database at Northeastern update periodically and add new jobs for which he could apply? And if he is unsuccessful in obtaining a position for this semester, is he given an opportunity to apply for second semester jobs (again, will new job possibilities be posted?) He really needs a job and wants to take advantage of the work study offer, but is having limited success so far in obtaining employment. Thank you for any advice anyone can provide.

Since semester just started, there’s definitely a rush to find work study jobs… everyone who is eligible is applying, so yeah, lots of competition. But new jobs are posted all the time (I’ve definitely found a job mid-semester before) and positions will open up. Should be able to find something eventually, just might take some time.

there are some work study jobs with tons and tons of positions and others with just a few… maybe your son is just applying to the wrong ones. I know the ones in the mailrooms hire lots of students.

Thanks for your responses to my questions about the work study program. I passed the suggestions on to my son. And good news- he received a job offer on Friday!
