As part of my finanical aid package I have a work-study part where i think i have to earn about 2500 over the school yr. During my first yr, I dont plan on working bc i want to be able to concentrate on classes and adjusting. However, I am interested in knowing what are jobs like on campus. I think I would really be interested in working in the office of Undergrads bc i feel as if after completing this process I know so much info i would like to pass on. Anyways my main question is, what are jobs like on campus and how much do you get paid. Also if I earn the 2500 required everything else i own is for my own use?Soorry for my poorly worded question.....

There are a lot of jobs on campus. Some students work in a library, others will file papers, others will work in the Alumni office, etc. I work as a tour guide which is a lot of fun, although you can't apply for that until the end of your freshman year. There are a lot of jobs where you essentially get paid to sit at a desk and do your homework, so working might not actually distract from getting work done. You could also work as part of a program called 5SURE and drive people around in golf carts at night. I think all campus jobs pay at least $10/hour. Most will pay $10-13 for starting positions and will go up the longer you work there. Other jobs might pay more to begin with.

You could also find a job that isn't through Stanford. If you can tutor students in SATs or AP courses, you can probably pretty easily make $30/hour. It's not unheard of to have students make as much as $50/hour especially for tutoring in subjects like AP Calculus or AP Physics.

If by the office of undergrads you mean the admissions office, you wouldn't be offering anyone advice there. There are student jobs where you answer the phones (although you might have to be a tour guide first? not sure) and there are definitely student jobs where you file paper work there.

So would you say that working will not impact your grades, social life etc??Bc I was trying to avoid working for first quarter to be able to adjust but it appears that is not possible. Also about what percentage of students have jobs?

Just manage your time properly, and I don't think it should be too much of an issue. Don't know exact statistics on how many students have jobs, but I've worked before, and the supervisors have always been pretty understanding about classwork and whatnot.

I can't find a listing of on campus jobs on www.cardinalcareers.stanford.edu

is this usually the site where u go and find the job offers?

There's no one site that has all job listings. You just have to ask around when you get here, for the most part.

Also for those of you who do have campus jobs, do you make enough to pay your student contribution each quarter?
