What about working during the school year: in Madison we were told that it is very easy to find a job even if you are not qualified for Federal work study. In Northwestern though it sounded like campus jobs and work with the professors are available only for Federal work study, otherwise it would be something in Evanston. We get no work study in fin package for Northwestern but have a Stufford loan. We could ask to convert it to work study instead. Should we do that? Or take a Stafford loan and try to find work outside of campus?

Take the stafford loan. Find a non-work/study job at Northwestern. I have a non-work/study job. They may seem impossible to find but at least 1/4 of all jobs on-campus are available to non-work/study students.

Thanks, tenisghs - How do you find a non-work/study job at Northwestern?
How many hours realistically you can work during freshman year without jeopardizing the study? What kind of work is available?

Library, Research Assistants

Do not work more than 10 hours a week your freshman year.

Does it mean that you earn less than the person on the same position but with work/study?

You have more flexibility to determine your work schedule. Work/study students must work up to the total allocated on their financial aid.
