Describe how your college education will allow you to achieve your personal or professional goals. (500 words or less)

As Major David "Booster" Graham lit up his afterburners, I could feel the rumble in my chest. The deafening sound the aircraft produced turned the eyes and ears of the audience skyward. As I watched the F-16C turn and burn through the open sky, I wondered with amazement at how humans became so advanced as to produce something this mind-blowingly powerful. Ever since that day at the Chicago Air and Water Show, obtaining a degree in aerospace engineering and a commission into the United States Air Force has been my number one priority.

This summer, I will be taking my first steps into the vast world of the United States Armed Forces by joining the USAF’s auxiliary unit – the Civil Air Patrol. The Civil Air Patrol is a volunteer organization that is assigned three key missions: search and rescue, disaster relief operations, and emergency services. The Civil Air Patrol prepares cadets for these missions through education and physical activity. One such activity is the Summer Encampment. Typically a week in length, cadets are pushed to their physical limits in an intense, military structured environment similar to the USAF’s Basic Military Training (BMT). The Civil Air Patrol will help me develop my leadership skills which are needed in a college environment. The Civil Air Patrol will also help me in the AFROTC. Having practiced drills, ceremonies, and being accustomed to military life style will put me a step ahead of the other students.

Ranked as one of the top 10 engineering universities in the nation, Purdue’s aerospace engineering program will prepare me for real world challenges that society faces today. This is quite apparent since Purdue taught Neil Armstrong the knowledge required to make the long voyage to the moon and back. Aviation and astronomy have always been a major interest of mine, and Purdue will allow me to expand upon those interests and put them to use.

Without a quality college education, it appears seemingly impossible to achieve my goals. With the help of Purdue, I can become the United States Air Force pilot behind the controls on an F-16C, turning and burning through the wild blue yonder.
