Working Abroad

I have yet to speak with a school official regarding this, but I have the opportunity next summer to intern overseas for the govt, Chile specifically, under one condition and that is that I need to cover all expenses myself (ie. food, travel, housing, etc.). I may be able to get special deals on housing and other certain things but still unsure of what exactly. The internship would last for the full duration of summer, 3 in a half months to be exact and since Chile isnt the most expensive of places I figure it shouldn't cost me more than 4k for everything. I was wondering has anyone looked into doing an internships overseas and would UCs typically would offer financial aid for doing something like this or would it only be possible if I were taking classes in the country?

Any input much appreciated

My best friend did something similar, but for the US government in Chile. You won’t get financial aid. BUT it sounds like a great opportunity, so I think passing it up would be a mistake.

You could look at studying abroad in Chile–that’s June-December, and doing the internship with studying abroad. THEN you’d get financial aid.

Round-trip ticket is about $1200, housing varies from maybe $150-$400/month depending on where you live, and food is a little cheaper than here, but not that much. Also, I presume you know Spanish? There’s very little English there.

I did study abroad there while I was at UCLA, and had an internship, so feel free to shoot me any more questions.
