I want to take calculus classes online either with the local community college or the University of North Carolina. I need to find a way to get personal one-on-one tutoring for these subjects. It is unlikely I’ll be able to appear on campus either at the local community college or at North Carolina State University. It is a complicated mess of not having a car and the invariable outcome of pulling long shifts in a trade to earn a living. I live in Salisbury North Carolina. I live in a small town known also as a commuter town. People pretty much live in a house and utilize services. For example, they park their kids in daycare/school, eat a burger, stop at the bank, and swing by their attorney’s office downtown. Tutoring is for the children here. In every other city in the world tutoring is for adults getting industry ready credentials. How should I go about looking for a tutor for college level classes? I suppose I could check Krage’s List (you know Cr*ig’s List)? How much should I pay a C’s list tutor for tutoring in college level calculus? Should I be doing something different. How well might online tutoring work? I guess the university of NC has online tutors? Are there other private online tutors in college mathematics out there? Thanks for you help
Start with online videos. Some people love Khan Academy, though I tend to find them kind of dry.
Or go to youtube, and google “area under curve” or “integration by parts” or whatever the topic is. You’ll find videos by real teachers, and I like the way most of them are presented more than the Khan Academy ones.
The advantage to this approach is that you can stop the video, finish the problem, then continue, or replay as often as you need to.
ok. I will use videos. thanks for the heads up bjkmom that KA is dry compared to the broader selection on yutube. I found out at school that the videos, other students, and lots of spare time is how students master college calc outside of class. Blew my mind when I found out because in algebra all I needed was a solutions manual and study guide like clff’s notes. But in college calc I’m finding that the textbook is designed to push the math student past their abilities used in algebra. thanks all.
@dubious9, you don’t have to put an asterisk in “youtube.” If you need to put an asterisk in a word to get it to show up, you shouldn’t use the word in the first place - spelling around the filter is not allowed.
