When a MT of theatre major graduates with a 4 year degree and would like to teach children in a theatre program or at a school, is a teaching certificate required in most cases? I'm sure at public schools this would be true, private schools?

Most catholic schools seem to want to hire teachers with certificates... but if they are simply hiring someone to direct a play or do an after school theatre activity, they may not require a certificate.

Most private high schools do not require a teaching certificate. I taught theatre at a private high school without one. However, many of the prep schools are hiring theatre teachers with an MFA or an MA in theatre to teach at their programs, or looking for teachers who can also teach english, history, or some other academic class. This all depends on the size of the schoool, and of the theatre program.

Carney Sandoe is an agency that connects potential private school teachers with private schools. If interested in private schoolteaching I would suggest going to their web site and filling out the application. They will get back to you as to whether they think schools would be interested in your skill set, and whether they think they would be able to submit you to schools for potential jobs.
