Working and going to school?

I'm still in high school but I was thinking of getting a job at CVS or Payless when I turn 18 in December. My mom said its best not to work while still in school because I wouldn't be able to manage my time or be as focused on school. I just wanted to start since I could help save money for college and was going to get a head start on my resume.Even if I went to college my mom would prefer I just do school and not work at the same time. She said its better to hold off working as long as possible because you have to pay taxes. But I heard people that work actually do better in school.I understand it might be hard to manage but I think in college it would be easier.

If you have free time and could use the money, go for it. If you’re struggling to make grades good enough for the colleges you want, that should come first. When you get to college, if you have a single concern about your ability to handle the transition in academics, it would be best to wait until second semester to work, just to see how you do. If you’ve worked in high school or if you can find a job with light hours, it might be good to continue on a not-too-involved basis for that first semester. (This is all given that it sounds like you don’t need the paycheck as soon as possible.)

PS, re: your mom’s point about taxes. (Paycheck - taxes) > (0 paycheck - 0 taxes)
