Working at UCLA

I'm looking to get a job at UCLA next year (as a sophomore). Planning to work roughly fifteen hours a week, maybe a little more or less depending. I also currently have an internship which is primarily online. If I can, I'd like to have a job which allows me internet access with a fair amount of time to work on projects for my internship.

I've thought about a job working at the front desk at one of the res halls, but I don't know a whole lot about it. Any insight or ideas?

Why would they hire you to not work (be online working on your projects)?

I’m assuming your “internship” is programming work. Front desk is not just standing in front of a counter; you’ll have less than 50% of the time to “work on your projects”.

A suggestion in CLICC. Once you stay long enough to become a lead consultant, then you can hang out in the back and really do nothing , or your internship work.

Other than that, there’s no job where your supervisor would be happy to pay you to do your work (unless you’re self employed …)

How about being one of those people who swipes people into the res halls at night? Cant remember what they are called. But there are usually like 2-3 people, and only the person at the podium is doing the swiping. You’ll have plenty of time for programming. The only problem I see is that you have to stay up really late. 5am I think.

How long is the average shift for on-campus jobs?

Access control. And they have two shifts, one from 9 pm - 1 am, and the second from 1 am - 5 am.

When I was a full-time admin at UCLA, I got parking. How does parking work for part-time library clerks?

Yeah access control is a good job for you. You won’t be “guarding” the res halls
every shift though. You must work one graveyard shift a week.

There are other assignments (at the front desk) you will have to do. But you can count on one night where you are getting paid to mostly do your programming assignments.
