is it possible to work when one is in medical school?

My dad did it… with two kids and a wife. hard, but doable

Definitely doable for the first couple and possibly 4th year. 3rd year would be hard to do any significant amount of work just because you physically wouldn’t have time. The other times you could do a good 20 hours a week most weeks if you are willing to sacrifice anything besides medical school and work.

Don’t know about being a full time med student + full time employee, but I do know about full time law student + full time employee. My cousin’s husband was in law school and most recently passed his Bar exam; they have 2 children together and live together; he is a full time employee. Same as Nomita’s example except for law school.

Most people won’t. Certainly during the first two years, I taught for Kaplan and I had friends who tended bar or waited tables. But obviously, the job needs to be something with enough flexibility that you can adapt for test weeks and the need for studying.

In the third year, it’s impossible.

In the fourth year, one of my fellow residents actually worked at Target - but again, shift work, not necessarily a day to day career type of job.

It is possible but pretty dumb.
You have very little free time. That time should be relaxing and having fun and destressing.
Many think that once they are IN med school, grades don’t count. Unfortunately they do more so due to decent residencies which are harder to get into than medical school.

Much more “reasonable” (ie we all did it) is to go into debt and borrow. You will have it paid off when you are 50.

Actually, the best deal is by far to enlist - either reserves or active duty. You get paid well, end up with no debt and have great residencies. Unfortunately, war is a great training area for docs.
