Is it worth it to get a job during high school? I have alot of friends whos grades dropped when they started working. Maybe it was cause they get that 7/hr they think it's a lot of money. I'm thinking about applying for a job at barnes and noble so I could get a little money, so when I get in college I have some spending money. What do you think is it good to get a job or bad?

I wouldn't do it, simply b/c school's more important to me, and I just don't think it's worth it...Maybe you should do it if you're going to REALLY need that spending money...Otherwise, don't get a job if it's not going to help you.

Work experience looks great on a college app..but be forewarned that your GPA may suffer. Numerous studies point to the relationship between GPA and work hours. Learn your limits and abide by them.

I actually started doing better in school when I got a part time job (about 10-14 hours a week).

well if you're a senior, why WOULDN'T you want a job to get some money, and most importantly some working experience? Especially if you've gotten strong mid year grades?

I got a job at the start of my senior year, my grades have actually improved...Maybe its because I make sure things get done when I have limited time..

Either way the extra money is nice.

I worked back in high school and regret it to this day. Well back then min wage was only $4.25 an hour, but that caused my grades to slip delaying college and I am just now starting to recover.

Jobs are good in your senior year. Make sure you tell your employer how much you'd be willing to work, and keep on top of school assignments. Benefits: you can start taking some financial responsibility, get some spending money, etc.

$7? That's an incredible wage for any high school kid. Holy smokes. $6 would be fine starting pay around here, but I'd still expect minimum wage most places.

Anyway, don't get a job if you don't need the money. Work experience is helpful, so you could probably do it during the summer without much scheduling trouble, but hours spent ringing up books are hours that could be spend doing meaninful volunteer work.

I was looking at a job, to help the parents a tad on the college bill since it's not going to be cheap (out of state). Maybe my stocks will do well enough and I won't have to resort to that:)

I think every kid should get a job... its so different from all of the other things we learn and IMO more important then many of the things we learn. I got a job in May of my junior year, worked all summer, and am still at the same place now, in Feb of my senior year. I make fairly good money, $8 plus commission, and have good hours. I work at a family owned gym and most of the people that work there are retired professionals... one a retired lawyer, one a retired contractor, a teacher, etc. If I'm having a bad night it takes me away from the pettiness of high school and college admissions.

As for grades... I had straight A's last year and currently have straight A's this year. I take four APs at school then take college classes two days a week on the days I don't work.

... anything can be done you just have to manage your time.

I had various jobs throughout high school and just quit halfway through my senior year so I can enjoy the end of school.
