Working for a major in civil engineering!

Hi,
This is my first time posting in these forums and I have done some searching. I haven't found much information on getting prior experience before even getting a career in the industry of structural civil engineering let alone steps to become one. My goal as of now is to get through my community college by taking the required classes to transfer into civil engineering degree programs for the schools I want to enter (looking at mines or CU Boulder), gain work experience then become a structural engineer.

I have tons more planning to enter this field, especially with other road blocks ahead such as a recession/learning disabilities/time management. Luckily I have high determination and the word quitting is not in my dictionary. I want to do everything possible to make it into this field. Since as a kid, I have always had a thing for constructing. When I was in middle school I wanted to be a construction worker. I feel that this is the field that fits me. I do enjoy getting out of an office, I love designing and building of objects be it building, bridges, dams w/e. Quite honestly it also makes me feel successful, just because of the determination I would be putting into getting this far.

Enough with my life story and on to my question. What other steps should I take to landing a job and not end up like someone with a degree working at McDonnald's. Most importantly, I want to get a part time job to build up a resume, but I have no idea on where to go or If I need any further education before landing a job to get my a head start in this field. Would working as a construction worker be a good start or working for a structural engineering company(not sure how to go about that or even have some jobs for someone with no education in the field yet)? What about joining toast masters?

I would love to hear from anyone who can help!

Thanks!
