Working in College

if you're going to work frosh year see if you can get a job with visibility to other students. That way you get to meet other students, something you want to do frosh year. A friend of mine worked as a cashier at the 7-11 type store at the student center; it was owned by the student assoc, but carried sodas, candy, etc. Almost everyone went in there at one time or another, and at a large state school there were probably thousands of students who knew her by name. Talk about meeting people!

I'm a lifeguard and and Orientation Student Leader (mainly a summer job but we have training every week so not really). I also want to work in a lab during the school year so I can spend my summer with more interesting interships or maybe even OSL again if I like it.

mikemac - so true. my roommates are sometimes kind of shy, and they said the other day how they wouldn't know anyone if it wasnt for me - because i know everyone. I took my new roommate to campus on the day before classes began last semester and introduced her to at least 50 people, and school hadn't even begun yet. :)

I work as a clerk in a game store, 14 hours a week. I get no money off my parents for college so I have to work.

Yes - always get a job on campus if you can - they are way more flexible with hours and the pay can be pretty good. My freshman year, I worked for Network Services as a computer tech and earned $11.50 an hour. Now I work as an EMT with our campus student-run 9-1-1 response ambulance - I make less per hour, but work a lot more hours since we operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Both of these jobs have been very good as far as working hours around classes.
