to current students -- how many of you work on campus?

I'm going to Rice this fall, and I hope to be able to work on campus for maybe 10-13 hours a week. I didn't qualify for any need-based aid, but is it still possible to do work/study?
And how hard is it to get these jobs? Are there only a few openings for students who don't qualify for need-based aid?

If you could give some general information on working at Rice, I'd appreciate it.

If you weren't offered any work/study as a part of your financial aid, you can still work as a student under "Rice Work" (it gets confusing, don't worry about it).

Some departments prefer to hire work/study students since your pay would come (at least partially) out of the FinAid budget and not their own, however you can still find jobs around campus open to regular "Rice Work" where the department funds 100% of your pay. Other than that, the two are equivalent. Rice Work is open to anyone.

There are a decent number of jobs available on campus, but they vary in pay. Higher paying jobs are more scarce and also require more skills. Jobs that are extremely interesting are also a bit more scarce vs. more menial jobs like working at the library.

Also, once you're a junior or perhaps even a sophomore, you can approach a professor of a class you really enjoyed and offer to grade papers. Not much money, but it's a little... I think I got ~7/hr.

If you've got a car or bike, there are private tutoring gigs for high schoolers around the area that pay extremely well. I got about 19/hr for that... as a Rice student, high schoolers' parents (or at least, the ones that have significant money to throw around) see you as a hot commodity. =)
