I'm a senior Mechanical Engineer right now trying to decide between getting a job or going to grad school. I think I'll apply to both and see what happens, but I'd like some advice on the consequences of doing so.

I know I want to eventually end up doing research in nanoscience/metamaterial via material science, but the types of jobs I'm most qualified for right now are in the medical device industry. Will working in an unrelated industry hurt my chances at getting into a top engineering grad school?

Also, say I get into a grad school and turn them down in favor of a job. Will turning down an acceptance harm my ability to get back into the same school (or any school) when I apply in the future?

Thanks for the help.
