How are the gyms at UVA? Do a lot of students work out? Do people run on the campus? Also, how's the food for someone who's looking to build muscle?

Thanks :)

I am interested in this as well. I wonder if any of the gyms have power racks and barbell free weights, etc. As for the food, when I was there for orientation that was my main goal in checking out the dining hall. I went to O-Hill and decided that there are tons of options for good food. The meats are pretty low quality I think, but there is lots of pasta for carbs and they have milk on tap. If you are smart in your selections I think it won’t be a problem. Since it’s “all you care to eat” I have every intention of meeting my bulking goal of 15 pounds and I think I can do it with the majority of the calories being pretty clean. Good luck!

A good place to get your veggies with the salad bar, too.

There are loads of runners here, both at UVa and in Charlottesville. We have a few sponsored runners who live here (one who went to trials this year) and there are road races almost constantly in the spring.

You can see details about the different facilities here:

I just mentioned the new track facility on the blog the other day. There’s a link to pictures in my entry:

There are fantastic trails in the area, too.

The huge new Aquatics and Fitness Center is right across the street from the first year dorms. You should find photos online, including the large gyms, etc. The 1970s Slaughter Recreation Center is tucked away in a corner, but is still close to first year dorms. There also is the older Memorial Gym along Emmett St. (it used to have an indoor track around the whole gym in the 1980s- I assume it still does).

My son loved the new Aquatics & Fitness Ctr his first year. As Charlie says, it’s close to first year dorms. He used it mostly for lifting weights, but there’s lots of other things available. He enjoyed the cafe there where you can use a meal swipe to get a smoothie and an energy bar (he always had extra swipes). This year he’ll probably use Memorial Gym just for proximity.
