working out

What are the best places to work out on/around campus? i've heard Gregory can get quite crowded and even when i was there during orientation it was full of people. Are there any others? anna hiss gym is near my dorm, is it any good?

The RecSports center just south of the stadium. It’s basically another gym. It has a better weight room (IMO) and cardio machines (among other things, I’ve just never explored it fully). I used to go every T/Th at around 9:30 in the morning and there were maybe 8 or 9 other people there. It still remains less crowded in the afternoons too. Basically, people just don’t know about it, even though it’s a 5 minute walk from Gregory.

are all students allowed in Bellmont 348, or is it for athletes only or something? (i ask was too many questions on here! haha) i’m just trying to scout out a place that won’t be as crowded

never mind, i found my answer! this guy keeps a pretty cool blog: [Austin Fitness](UT Rec Sports | Fitness and Outdoors)

How many squat racks/bench press areas do Gregory and Rec Sports typically have?

Also is there an area for deadlifts?

If I remember correctly, there are ~4 squat racks and ~4 benches in Gregory + an extra room for “heavy lifting” that I assume has a couple more of each.

There’s not much room to do deadlifts but they do have a couple of deadlift racks.

Gregory has about 6 power racks and 6 flat benches in the main room. In addition, there are 2 power racks and 2 flat benches in the PL room. Also in the PL room are 4 rubber mats that can be used for deadlifting. Really you can just throw a bar down anywhere to deadlift - there’s room. but the employees might *****.

Thanks for the info guys.

Also, how long is the wait usually to use benches/racks?

Gregory is too crowded. I wouldn’t recommend going there for lifting

^So I take it I should hit up Rec Sports then?

Yeah, it’s a lot better. Much less crowded for no reason. It’s a 5 minute walk from Gregory. If you live in Prather/San Jac it’s actually closer to walk there than to Gregory.

I used the weight rooms at the Rec Sports place several times a week, early morning (9:30am-11:00am) and in the afternoon (3,4ish pm).

Gregory weight rooms are closed in the morning hours (classes taught in there) but in the afternoon around 3pm it’s a madhouse of crowd.

Alright thanks, looks like I’ll be going to RecSports for my weight training needs.

Is it difficult to find vacant elliptical machines? I already have a membership at the YMCA; should I just continue going there?

6 benches? and there are how many thousand students at UT? haha

they are proposing another gym somewhere closer to West Campus. will be built sometimes soon.
