This upcoming school year, I’ll be a freshman studying 16 credit hours/semester. I’ve applied for two internships, one paid with a Senate campaign that requires I work 15 hours/week, and one with a Presidential campaign that requests 8 hours/week.
I really want to get great grades in college, but I also want to take on these extra opportunities to build work experience. Most of my classes will be online this semester, as would be these internships, if I’m lucky enough to get them.
Is 21 hours of work per week too much to still be academically successful? What would that require? Thanks for your help and experiences!
A lot of colleges will not let freshmen, or any students, work for more than ten hours a week. Personally, I do not think it will be possible for you to do this without sacrificing your grades in a very detrimental way. The fifteen hour a week job will be hard enough as it is.
You will be under a giant amount of stress and will have no social life whatsoever. You might end up not performing well at either job and your grades will suffer. Think carefully. Prioritize what matters. You’re in college to learn and grades are extremely important. I can’t see how taking on these two jobs will help you do that.
So my son worked 15 hours week while taking 18 credits. Everyone is different. See if you can work hours according to your schedule. So times you have time work more and times you need to study then you work less. This is what he did and it worked out just fine. Michigan is an underrated very tough school. Don’t take on too much till you get to your first exams. Then you can adjust from there. This is best of both worlds. He’s at Michigan also… Go blue!!
