working without getting paid???

I'm currently a h-4 visa status, which means I can't legally get paid by my school for working for them. I already petitioned to change to f-1, which allows me to get paid. But for now, all I can do is 'volunteer.' I won't receive any response about my petition in a couple of months, so I'm kind of stuck

Should I take this time off to suck up to a professor I can work for and explain to him my situation and work for him without getting paid? It'll be good job experience for my resume and it'll be easier for me to get an internship/future job.

I'm planning on grad school

what do you think?

Research for credit

I would volunteer with an organization related to my field.

I can’t research for credit til I’m a senior/junior, when I get more classes behind me

I’m not volunteering either. I used to in HS but I don’t have time and I’m poor.

I think I’ll go ahead with helping out a professor without getting paid… hmm I’m wondering if that qualifies under work experience.

I’d still just do it. You want to get as much on your resume as possible, it makes it easier to get paid later on.

Yes, you have two options: do a credit-based research opportunity or a field practicum (unpaid professional experience).

There’s nothing wrong with volunteering. You may get a leadership role, which look good on a resume.

I would def help out a professor w/o getting paid. I think they’d be a great reference later on and you could guilt trip them into writing an amazing LOR. ha ha
