Working

So I've been working for 1.5 weeks now and I feel compelled to come here and start a discussion about it.

I'm curious what type of jobs CCers have. Do you work after school? Over the summer? On the weekends? Where? Do you feel more mature? Do you spend all of the money you earn or do you save it? Do you have a typical teen job or something different? How did you spend your first paycheck? Are you friends with your coworkers? Do you find that you're cheaper with your own hard earned money than when spending your parents' money? Do you drive to work, use public transportation, walk, bike, or hitch a ride? Do you like your job?

You don't have answer all of those questions, share your working experiences...

I'll PM it.

I babysit. I work one day after school and once on the weekend for now. Last year a worked a LOT more. I didn't this summer because she had a baby. I don't feel particularly more mature... actually more immature since I'm playing with a 3 year old and an infant. I save then spend. Typical teen job, I still consider it a job because it's something I do regularly and get a decent amount of money for. I don't really have coworkers. I don't find that I'm cheaper with my money than my parents or whatever because my parents just don't give me money, I only get things for back to school, Christmas, birthday, and occasionally when I'm going to the movies or something. This is why I babysit. My parents drive me and the parents take me home. I don't like it a whole lot, but I'm not old enough to get a real job that I want because almost everywhere around here hires at 16. I definitely plan on getting a 'real' job as soon as I turn 16 next year. :)

I just got a job this week! Woo!!

I will work at a restaurant as a busser. I plan on working during the school year also, at most twice afterschool and mostly on weekends, especially Sundays.

I plan on spending my first three paychecks and saving 1/4 of the ones after.

Why the hell would I drive? :)

I ride my bike to the Metro station (about 2 miles away), then it's a 22 minute ride to the restaurant. It's really relaxing, allows me time to read books or just stare out the window and think. Not to mention cycling costs next to nothing.

i want to get a neighborhood job of walking dogs, b/c i love dogs but can't get one. so i will try this so that i can see what being a dog owner is like for part of the time. i need to figure out how i'm gonna do it, and if i'll have any time for it.

I will be starting work in late September - early October at a local farm. Last spring I worked strawberry season and made $120 for 26 hours spread over 2 weeks (about 2 hours a day or so). We got paid by how much we picked, so it really separated the hard workers from the crappy people. A girl I know made $80 and was ****ed, but I was like... Seriously, you picked crappy peas and strawberries and not very many of them. Shut up. I would have made a heck of a lot more if there hadn't been so much damn slug damage this year.
In the fall I'll be working the lines, cash register, pumpkin picking, and general upkeep for their Halloween season. Basically easiest job ever, according to my cousin, who worked there for 2 years. You sit on a stool in front of the hayrides, take tickets, and the farm people bring you free food, and you get paid $5-7 and hour, 6-8 hours a day for weekends and the days you CAN work. Very nice. He made typically $500-1000 in a month.
I feel the same maturity that I did before. I always have had to work for my spending money, babysitting for my brother first, then babysitting for my parent's friends, etc. The only "free" things I get from my parents are: a home, school supplies, sports equipment, and Christmas presents. I'm helping a lot for my school clothes this year ($130 from me and about $200 from my parents) and if I want more clothes after that, I'll have to wait for my paycheck.
I spent my first paycheck on a nose piercing and a new phone.
I actually became friends with two girls I didn't really like at first, which was weird. I am also equally responsible with money, no matter whose it is, when it comes to shopping... My mom had a habit of making me feel very, very guilty about any luxurious purchases, and therefore made me so careful with my money that any clothes shopping is horrible because I try to stretch $50 on 10 pieces of clothing... Yeah right, unless you're at a Salvation Army.

1.) If being a stipper counts
2.)Every night. They always want some love during the summer.
3.)Saturdays, but never Sundays...I am very religious. I hate baby-killer and those homosexuals and those damn Jews.
4.) On the corner, but in a club if it is raining.
5.) Only right before I rip of my false business-man outfit.
6.) I generally spend it on cheeze-its and flavored condoms. However, if I have to, I will store it where the sun don't shine.
7.) I think I am different, because I am the youngest kid at my middle school to earn over 35 dollars in one night.
8.) Walmart.
9.) Try "friends with benefits."
10.) I am not cheap! It takes at least a 5 to get me in your car and...
11.) I ride by a sleigh pulled by black midgets.
12.) Yeah, but it is getting a little "ichy" and "yellow discharge-ish"

/sarcasm for those to dumb to figure it out.

I only had a job for the last couple weeks of high school. I worked at a clothing store for about 6 months and then quit. My co-workers were cool but I couldn't stand the new store managers we got (the assistant managers were nice though). Plus retail is just not for me.

I never saved my money. I always meant to, but I never did. It didn't really matter because I never really needed to save it for anything. I kind of miss having spending money, but it's not a huge deal. I never had spending money before the job anyway, so it wasn't hard to readjust.

I took the bus. I don't know how to drive, but it didn't matter because there's a bus stop right at the top of my street and it took me straight to the mall I worked at (only about a seven minute ride).

I'm a lifeguard! I save kiddies' lives. Not great pay, but I like being near water, so it's all good.

I work at an ice cream shop, the only one in town open year round. I get to pick my hours during the school year, so it's really convenient. In the summer it's about 30 hrs a week, but only like 10 during the school year. I get paid $7.00/hr, which is kind of depressing. I usually save $50 out of each paycheck and spend the rest on clothes :)

I like my job though, it's easy and convenient. Always tempted to eat ice cream though...:)

I go to other people's homes and grand theft auto all their beer, soft drinks, coffee, and food.

Also I get paid $300/hour for gaming and raising pokemon levels incredibly fast i know how to train very well.

I just realized that I never shared about myself and I made the thread lol. I've been at Circuit City for almost two weeks now, and I realize that I hate retail. I do want money to save up and buy a few things, but I can't stand the downtime being unproductive. It also takes me about 2 hours to get there since I have to take 2 buses (even though its only about 7 minutes away by car), so that's a bit draining when its 95 degrees or raining. Everyone is a bit shocked that I'm still in high school, but they're not much older either. The pay is okay, so I think I'll stick around for a while, but I might ask to cut back on hours since now I have about 22 hrs/week, and it might be too much for the school year. I like being around electronics though.

For some reason, I feel that I'm supposed to be getting something gratifying out of working, but its just not there.

rmadden15: comical, and sickening.

I tutor kids spontaneously. I usually do it three hours a week or so, depending on how many kids I have during each week and the material I must teach.

I'm a club counselor at Club Libby Lu. It's the best job everrrr. I get to dress up as a fairy, sprinkle pixie dust in people's hair and make tips. I also ear-pierce and do hair.

Before that I was an administrative assistant at a furniture store.

I babysit too.

I work at a beach club during the summer and get $8/hour. I'm trying to get a job at Barnes and Noble during the school year, but it's not working out so hotly. lol.

It's fine. Serving people ice-cream gets annoying after a while, but we have access to free soda (good), free ice cream/shakes (slightly less good), and free fries (also good). Plus pay is usually $10.00 per hour because of tips.

Oh my god. I forgot about this...it's definitely not too strategic!

I work as a learn-to-skate coach. Just got the job a couple weeks ago, immediately, since I have my Level 1 certification.
It's an amazing job! Goes all year round. I am currently getting $16/hour as training wage. When I finish one more week of training I get $18/hour!!

I'm planning on working once or twice a week. It's good though for a student, because the hours are short!
Best job ever!

Last summer, I worked at my dad's office scanning decade-old files into the computer with a bunch of college students. It was fine, but the flourescent lighting got so obnoxious after a while, and working 9 to 5 in an office during the summer made me feel like I completely wasted my time.

Now, I babysit every Thursday during the school year for kids at my church. I make 25 dollars a week, which is awesome considering he naps most of the time. Compared to minimum wage jobs that aren't terribly flexible to crazy school and extracurricular schedules, it's great. If I have a test or something the next day, I pawn it off on my sister--at 13, she's pretty grateful for the money.

Techno, I think I'd start biking to work if I were you. That would take a half hour at the most.

how many of you guys work during school?
i'm thinking about getting a job and working friday nights and saturday mornings... or should i just work a lot during the summer?
