working

do u think 15 hrs a week is too much, too little or just right for during the school year

that's how much I work (three five hour shifts), and it works out okay for me. You just have to stay on top of your time management so you don't get stressed. I work from 5-10, so I still have time for clubs after school. At work I get a 15 minute break, which I use for hw and/or dinner. Also, I cashier, so sometimes when it's not busy I can be doing textbook reading etc. The key for me, though, is to try and do as much hw as possible on the nights when I don't work and over the weekends, so I don't have to stay up for a long time after I get home finishing it. But yes, to answer your question, I think 15 hours/week is very doable.

it's just right i guess. it depends on your schedule, but i mean its 3 hrs/day.

yea im working from 4-9 3 days a week and im just worried that i will be too overwhelmed by school work this is the first year that i will have a job during the school year

See how it goes. Surely if it gets too much for you, then you can cut down... But if you can cope, then having a job is a very good thing, and it shows responsibility. and gives you money for fun stuff

wow vegangirl, you sound like wonderwoman

Eh, you guys suck. The place I work is only open 3 hours a day, 4 days a week. Over the summer, I've been working every single hour they're open. Over the school year I'll only be able to work 2 days a week because they open right after school and I have clubs on the other three days.

I was thinking about getting a weekend job. DO you think this would be fiesable.

i hope this job really carries some weight on my application cuase i no im gonna be working my ass off

GreenDayFan, if you think you can balance school with work, I don't see why not. Working on weekends might actually be easier than working after school. Are you a freshman? The only problem I can foresee is that it might be hard to find a job due to your age.

Does working 15 hours a week during school really carry much weight? I kindve just assumed it would be about the same as doing a sport after school, right?

Working should definitely go around school. Don't let it get in the way, but having the extra cash is always nice.

I usually work between 15-20 hours a week. It's not bad at all. Most of it is on the weekends, so it just means less lazing around on Satuday/Sunday. It rarely gets in the way of homework. The only problem I had was when I had a huge independent study due the next day (which was done, but I wanted to practice the oral part of it and do a few refinements) so I simply changed my shift with a co-worker. Easy as that.

The real problem created by having a job during school is it getting in the way of extracuriculars. It was pretty stressful for me having to balance work/basketball. I put work as my priority and the coach was pretty ****ed whenever I missed practice. Luckily, I managed to juggle the two commitments and only ever missed a couple basketball practices. It just takes effective time management.
