Workload of Andover and Exeter

Hi guys, is there anyone a student in Andover or Exeter? How many hours of homework do you have per night if you choose the hardest courses possible? Are the courses hard to get an A on?I am hesitating whether or not I should apply to Andover and Exeter next year.

Speaking for Andover, if you are a senior, and you are taking 5 classes at the 500/600-level, then you should well expect that the HW commitment per class meeting will be an hour or more. That said, few students take, or advised to take, a courseload that heavy. Regardless, I would not use that as a determining to apply or not apply.

More than 95% of the class will graduate with less than a perfect GPA. Again, not something to focus on before one actually gets accepted.

@Andoverguy, I am a parent of a recent Andover grad. From my child’s experience, some teachers are tougher graders than others. Some teachers are better at conveying the material in class than others. So, as @skieurope stated, it may be unrealistic to expect all As during your Andover career. That said, my child was able to consistently take 6 courses and compete athletically. The workload itself seems very “doable”. My child reports that you will learn how to manage time and what work needs to get done and where to cut corners. Except for her junior year, my child got a fair amount of sleep, as well. My child was disciplined, but I’m sure you are too.
Choose to apply to Andover (or Exeter) because you want a fantastic high school education, because you want to have great relationships with faculty, because you want to be challenged, not because you’re worried about a GPA.

@skieurope do you mean that an hour per class per day?

Yes, but most courses meet 4 times a week. For some courses, one of those meetings is 75 minute long, so there might be additional homework/prep before or after that class. But again, I think you are getting ahead of yourself in getting involved I the minutiae before being accepted.
