Workload Question

there is very little chance you will get into art or music hum as a freshman....econ might not be a bad idea though i found that class (Prof. Gulatti's) to be very very interresting but quite hard....that would be a good choice though...also you dont HAVE TO take 6 classes and PE....I would suggest not taking PE if you do take 6 classes also your academic advisor might try to discourage taking 6 classes during freshman year since it could be overwhelming.

I'll speak from the humanities side of things. My first semester at Columbia, I had transferred over from the New School and was advised not to take more than four classes. Looking back on it, I should have taken at least five classes, especially with a work-load consisting of Intros I could have mostly slept through. The next semester, I had my ass kicked with five, mostly upper-level classes (in history and political science, plus lithum), including a foreign language class that took up at least 50% of my study time. It was doable, but it also meant many sleepless nights and very little time outside of school. I'm shooting for six courses this fall, though I wouldn't be surprised if I find myself scaling back to five after a week. I think six courses is perfectly doable, but if you want a transcript consisting of straight As (while remembering that you came to New York not only for college), your sanity might come first.
