Does a student have to file taxes on money earned through work study? The work study job I have this semester is my first "real" job so I'm not sure what I have to do regarding my earnings from that job and taxes. Thanks.

Work Study earnings are taxable. If this is your first real job you probably have not earned enough to have to file a return (@$5300ish last year for a dependent that is claimed on parent's tax return). However if you have had taxes deducted you should file a return to get the tax refunded to you.

Yea, I wont make close to that. So, does that mean that I don't have to worry about filing any kind of paper work come April?

Have they deducted taxes? If so you should file to get the taxes refunded. On the IRS web site there are freefile programs that are simple to use.

Also do you have any grants and scholarships? Any above the amount of tuition and fees are taxable income so you would have to take those into account in calculating your total income for deciding if you need to file taxes. And if you have any unearned income (interest etc) the earnings limit are lower before tax is due.

You also need to check whether you have to file a State tax return.
