World Languages

I am currently about to enter my third year of German as a sophomore. Would it stand out to a college if I took another 4 years of different language, such as Spanish? Before you ask how I would do this, I would do this online through my states virtual school.

In general, schools do not give a lot of consideration to online work. Maxing out the resources available to you at your own school looks the best. Could you continue taking German until your senior year? That would probably be optimal.

I would keep taking German and gain a proficiency in one language. You’d like end up being just OK at two languages, instead of actually good at one. Go all the way to AP, and if that is not offered at your school, take the SAT II German to demonstrate proficiency.

It ends at German 4, and the online course in my state are very good and all colleges accept the work that is done on them. For example, in my physical school you have to take an online course to graduate. But would it stand out to a college if I take 4 years of another language?

For colleges known for foreign languages, like Middlebury, perhaps. For the vast majority, probably not. The incredibly competitive pool of international applicants often has 3+ languages under their belt, and they have a harder time getting in than a domestic applicant.

Would it help if I would be in the honor societies for these languages?

I would start on a 2nd language. If you’re already solid in 1, getting another is a bonus.

I disagree. Everything is going to distance learning today. Colleges have to evolve with the digital-computer revolution just as society.

Size this up. As a math major French, German, & Russian were recommended as part of the electives because much of the development of mathematics was sourced in these groups. When I finished my undergrad I added 3 more languages to my high school Spanish & it proved to be my strongest resume asset. Since then I have expanded into the Gaelic.

Unless for certain program, having a third language at high level may not help much if any. I know many students took AP of their native language while taking a different world language at school. I have not seen any benefit by doing that either.
