49 in the world .......not bad gang

This brings very good news. Lets hope that the same will happen for the US news rankings

Certainly enlightening, Sax, and exceptional news.

My student will be starting next week in Engineering. After scrolling to the bottom of the page, I was heartened to read:

Academic Ranking of World Universities in Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences-2012

Pennsylvania State University - University Park – #11

[Academic Ranking of World Universities in Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences - 2012| 2012 Top 100 Universities in Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences |ARWU-FIELD 2012](http://www.shanghairanking.com/FieldENG2012.html)

The methodology and statistics upon cursory glance look to be more reliable than rankings relying on College Howler data.

As an aside, the saxophone figures in the next four years also. Thanks, Sax!

Pilot - will your son/daughter be auditioning for the Blue Band?

The ARWU (World rankings)looks good for PSU. Other ARWU world rankings: UWash(WA)# 18, UCSF#19, UMN#29, UCO# 33 all ahead of Duke, Dartmouth, Vanderbilt, Rice, UWash(ST.L), USC and Brown??? Really??? The US has 17 of the top 20 universities??? One Asian based university in the top 25??? UVA and Dartmouth not in the top 100??? Georgetown and Wake Forest not in the top 300???

UW is 19th

I think it’s maybe a ranking based more on research and global reputation than quality of undergrad education (though how does one define that?)… not to say that it is a worse ranking, per se, than US News… it just looks at different variables and/or gives different weight to common variables.

BTW, I’m behind you guys (PSU). If you beat us this year, I won’t be insanely angry. hehe

Yea. It is based on what you stated unlike US news which is based on prestige. That’s why Harvard is usually number 1 while on other lists it could be ranked 6th or 10th.

In 2011 Penn State was number 45, in 2010 number 43. There is a decline and it has to stop.

Just to clarify, I am a Penn State Student and I am very happy with the University but we dropped instead of climbing up.
