I'm not sure if anyone has posted this before (probably have), but how would you rank the top ten schools in the world?
My list begins:
Harvard
Oxford
Princeton
Cambridge
MIT
Beijing University (Beida)
Caltech
Indian Institue of Technology (one of them, I forgot which)
Stanford
Yale/Xinhua University
I'm basing the Chinese ones on stuff I've heard, such as how impossible it is to actually be admitted to them.

Stupid thread. You should go to a school based on whether YOU yourself like it or not, instead of what the world thinks.

How can I have a good opinion without hearing what some other people think?

Why do you need other people to tell you what school you should go to?

chinese universities are VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY competitive to get into. the proportion is like having everyone who applies to the ivy league compete for a spot at H Y or P.

but nevertheless, i dont think rankings should be based solely on acceptance rates, unless that is what your world rankings are. if it came down to academic quality of education, i dont think the chinese universities are up to par with the rest of them yet. i think berkeley grad would fit in with the rest of the list. and im glad u mentioned IIT, i think they get overlooked a lot compared to oxford and cambridge (much like how caltech gets overlooked compared to harvard and stanford).

"Why do you need other people to tell you what school you should go to?"
I'm sorry. Unlike you, I'm not God, I'm not all-knowledgable about college, and other people's opinions matter to me. I'm trusting that some (if not most) people have an idea of what they're talking about. How do you make your decisions without consulting anyone?

Easy- you either visit the school or call to set up an interview!!!!!

Every school will say that it is the best for you. And besides, I'm not gonna call Beijing University to set up an appointment 13000 miles away. I just think input from someone with more experience might help.

Whatever- it's your call. And the Chinese universities, no matter what anyone else says, don't compare to schools in the US like Harvard or like Oxford

Yeah, I figured. I think their professors and students are just as good, but they lack major resources and funding.

You have to draw in information to find out which college you want to go to. If I hear that Harvard, for instance, has a great reputation, that would make the school better in my mind.

IIT ( indian institute of technology ) is ranked 41 . Its not in the top 10

That's because those rankings are beyond retarded. The people that are at IIT are geniuses.

agreed. anyone who thinks IIT sucks is just ignorant.

Find a hero, find out where they got their education, follow them if the path is still open.

Please keep in mind that whatever the relative merits of a school-What is more important is what can you do with what you have,

Look around you. Did the successful people go to a famous college? Or are they successful, rich, and famous because of their personality and will.
JMHO.

asiaknight,
If you are not into science or engineering, this ranking is irrelevant for you.

I don't really like rankings, but I'll answer your question anyway, asiaknight. The link below is for the ranking of world universities by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. I don't agree with some of the ranks, though...

For whoever was doing rankings based on acceptance %s, if you actually worked it out Ox and Cam would not be anywhere near the top 10. At Ox this year the average acceptance rate ~25%. For my course (Chinese) the acceptance rate is ~40%. Does that mean we are crap compared to another university where the average acceptance rate is lower? I don't think so.

Mr.B: does the Seeker choose the Path or does the Path choose the Seeker?

(Somewhere some student is plotzed, wondering where the heck TheDad came up with that quote.)
