I'm somewhat new here, so I apologize if a extremely similar thread as already been posted (or if I posted this in the completely wrong section). If this is so... if you wouldn't mind linking me to the appropriate thread that would be great!!!

Sooooo my calc grade this quater is terrible (C- at the moment, but I'm hoping to bring it up to a C or + by the end of the term--this month). Even with this grade, the overall grade for the course (this semester) would be a B- or B if I'm able to raise up this quater a bit. The C- would still go on my transcript, but as I said, the final grade would be a letter-grade higher.

This is the lowest grade I've even gotten for a course. In my freshman year, I got a C+ in Gym... but again that was only a for the term not the semester/final course grade.

Anyway, my question is.. is this going to kill me app wise? I've got A's in everything else! I'm really trying my hardest and putting all the effort into the calc class as I possibly can... but I'm simply not good at math. I can't really come up with a way to express this... so yeah.

Advice/comments/or links^^ would be most helpful, and I'd be forever in your debt!

Meh, I know how you feel. I am working SOO hard right now to scrape a B- for the semester but the midterm is only going to bring that down. And, like you, I’ve gotten straight A+s in math since freshman year and mostly all As through high school. I used to consider myself a math person but now that I’m struggling in calc I realize that’s probably not the case.

Anyway, bump, because I’d also like to know the answer.

Glad to see I’m not the only one at least…

erm… bump again!

Good question; I’m in a very similar situation.

I’m currently a junior, and have made all A’s my entire HS career, except:
- I made a B (very high, although that doesn’t matter) my freshman year in Algebra II for just one semester. Did great the second semester.
- I currently have a D in AP Calculus this quarter. We took a test before Christmas break, and I think I may have done really well… and if so, my grade may increase to a C. And if I do well on the semester exam (next week), I may come out with a semester grade of a B or a C.

As of the end of my sophomore year, my u/w GPA is 3.9736 (all because of the B from Alg. II) and weighted is 4.8936. I’m taking 4 AP and 2 Honors classes this year, and am doing great in all of them (as in, I’m easily making As). Calc is the only one giving me problems, and it’s mainly because of my teacher. I’m great at math, but I require a solid basis/foundation of understanding; I can’t teach it to myself as some can.

How would you guys (familiar with what the colleges look at, and what impacts admissions chances) assess my situation? Is this really that big of a deal? If I redeem myself and make it out with an A next semester, would that pretty much free me of any possible discredit?

I know this is definitely going to hurt my u/w GPA (especially if I get a C), but I’ve been told that I shouldn’t worry, because since it’s an AP class, it won’t be as detrimental when colleges recalculate my GPA by their own scale.

I don’t know if I should be panicking, or if I should purposely fail so that I can take advantage of grade forgiveness through Florida Virtual School and completely replace my C (or whatever I end up with).

Any insight would be fantastic.

Bump, yet again please!

Bump

Actually ended up getting a flat B for the semester and scraped up a B- for the term.
But decided to bump anyway for the other ppl!

Its calculus. C’mon. every “noooo my grades” topic on this forum is about calculus.

A C won’t kill your application. Stop worrying. Applications are viewed holistically. That means, adcoms won’t see your C in Calculus and be like “I liked this guy at first, but a C? Nevermind, rejected!”

Now, 4 C’s, and it’d be a different case. Four C’s says “I don’t care about my education,” not “This class is very difficult but I am trying.”
