Hello, I just got accepted for the class of 2015. I'm very excited that got in; I couldn't stop smiling after reading the e-mail. But I am worried about Whitman's apparent lack of diversity. I'm African-American and I live in a large city in Arizona and attend a large public school, so I'm pretty used to seeing many people of different races in one setting and my group of friends represents a large variety of ethnicities, religions, and overall ideas. One of the reasons I gravitated towards Whitman was its feeling of acceptance. But after the reading the profile of class of 2015 that it is 74% white with comparatively only 24 African-Americans. I'm a little worried. Can anyone share their experiences of with diversity at Whitman? Is this concern justified or a non-issue?

First, congrats on getting in! Whitman is a great school (but I think you know that already).

I think the best thing you can do is to try to contact some current AA students at Whitman and find out what their experiences have been. The admissions office can probably put you in touch. Also, if you are able, you might want to try to do an overnight at Whitman, so you can hang out with some students and sit in on a few classes.

Good luck in deciding!

Thank you for the advice! Hopefully, I can arrange an overnight to see in person the situation. Talking to current students seem like a great idea, I tried looking through facebook, but the number of AA seemed either limited or they didn’t go on very often. Should I just email the admissions office to put me in touch with someone?

collegefree - my S is a senior at Whitman and one of his close friends and roommates all 4 years is AA. Would you like me to ask him if he’d like to talk to you? I think he would be happy to.

Yes, that would actually be very helpful. Would you like me to PM my contact info?
