Worried about Majors at Penn?

I've been lucky enough to have been admitted into CAS. However, i have heard that competition for popular majors like Economics is extremely tough and there are lots of people fighting for the popular majors.

Also i've heard that courses like intro classes in Maths and Economics are difficult and even if you get 90s you still get B's and only people who get 100/high 90s get the A's

I really want to major in Economics or Maths and since they are popular courses, is the competition for a major extremely fierce? How common is it that people don't end up majoring in their first choice subject?

That’s what I’ve heard too, since I will be entering penn as a freshman too. Would be great if a current student could clarify things up

bump! even though I don’T plan on majoring in those I have to take the intro math/econ so it’ll be good to know

second bump! Can somebody who is studying at Penn please come and give us some help?

I got a 78% in MATH 240 and got an A+, if that says anything. I highly doubt that other intro classes would be graded so harshly that scoring in the 90s is only enough for a B.

Yep, I don’t any such class exists. Perhaps MKTG101, but even that I don’t think is curved harshly.

what about the notion that you have to compete with other classmates for majoring in a popular subject, say Economics. Do they have a “cap” on the number of students that can major in a particular subject or do all students get the major they want?

Well, I’m an incoming student-prospective econ major or math major too-and I’ve heard that there is no cap for the number of students that can major. There is, however, a cap for the number of students in courses that can receive each grade level (A, B, etc).
