currently finished freshman year, and planning to transfer next year (i have not started transfer apps yet). im a little confused about one thing on this whole transfer process. am i applying to get into a major thus getting into the school, or am i applying to get into the school, but then have to again go through another selection process into the schools major? because as of now, im absolutely certain on what i want to study, and if i dont get into the major after transferring to another school, well, i have no idea what ill do then.

I think you should specify which school you're applying to.

I know for UNC, if you apply as a Freshman, you apply directly to the school's General college. If you apply as a Sophomore, you apply to the program directly.

Yes, it does depend on the school and the major.

For some schools, transfer apps are open but not into certain departments. Examples I can think of are certain Purdue Engineering majors, certain majors in some of the UC's.... I'm sure there are numerous other examples. Purdue, eg, accepts a LOT of transfers, but zero into some Engineering majors. For other Engineering majors there (and in most - all? - other schools), you would have to specify intended major on your application.

Further, for some schools, you DO need to apply into a particular school - maybe the Business School or Engineering School or Conservatory or whatever. Or even into a specific major.

So we do need to hear more about your intended major and the school(s) you are targeting.

BTW, for most transfer apps, even if you were not required to specify your intended major, it is often an important part of your reason for transfer - better program, specific prof specialties, major not available at your current school... so important to discuss in the application. Other times, your reason for transfer may be related to school atmosphere, size or other factors.... and you might not know your intended major. But you would usually know that you are considering xxx or yyy and would discuss how the new school is strong in both. So usually at least some discussion of your intended major(s) comes into play.

i think the schools im applying to are not widely known, but they are: Minneapolis college of art and design, savannah college of art and design, california college of the arts, maryland institute college of art, pratt institute, school of visual arts, otis college of art and design. and im planning on going into graphic design w/digital art or illustration. i didnt mention the schools when i made this topic because i assumed most schools transfer process were the same -

I personally recommend calling the Admissions office of the individual school to ask.
