Worried, Please Help!

Hi All,

I'm a 9th grader this year and I take the following classes:

Pre-IB Biology
Spanish 2
Pre-IB Adv. Geometry
Pre-IB English 9
Pre-IB World History/Geography 2
P.E (Required)
Intermediate Band.

I was just wondering if any of you guys had any thoughts about summer courses. I would want to take Algebra 11/trig over the summer along with Spanish 3. Any advice? And if so, where should I take these courses? I greatly appreciate all your time.

Hopeful 10th grade schedule:

IB Chemistry
IB Spanish 4
IB Math SL 1
Pre-IB English 10
Pre-IB Government
P.E (required)
WHAT SHOULD MY LAST CLASS BE????????

Thanks!!!

I think you should…do something fun for your last class!
like band/orchestra/choir/theater/art

I agree, you should take something fun. Colleges like to see people who are well-rounded, not just those that burn themselves out with challenging courses.

well I like band, and I think I’m going to stick with it. But what about the summer classes. Should I do both, and where should I take them?

you can take summer classes at summer school or community colleges. Take them only if you don’t really have anything else to do during your summer. It’s better to go to camps or get a job than just take classes.

northwestern’s center for talent development has a wide range of classes (i took chemistry there) and it’s a lot of fun. you meet lots of other kids who are smart and their courses are challenging. you get to spend time on campus and around evanston/chicago. you need to have taken the ACT or SAT to qualify, or else get good recommendations. most schools count it for school credit.
as for spanish, concordia language villages counts for credit at some schools. i haven’t been to it, so i don’t know if it’s any good.
have more fun! do a music camp or something. getting a job looks good on college applications too, and can be fun.

You should stick with band if you really enjoy it, but just a word of warning: be aware that if it’s not weighted, it could hurt your GPA, and consequently, your class rank. Again, if you really enjoy it, GPA isn’t a good reason not to take it, but for me, I wish someone had warned me about the effects it would have on my class rank.

I second stayingafloat that you might want to get a job instead of just taking classes, or maybe take night classes and work during the day, or something. Jobs look good on college applications, and it’s gotten to the point where you look bad if you don’t have one.

You seem like a really hard worker, and I’m sure you’ll get into some great colleges no matter what. Good luck!

Pick something challenging and that you like.
