worried

I am applying for mechanical engineering at the Cockrell School of Engineering at UT. My GPA is 4.00 unweighted, 34 on ACT (English 35, Math 34, Reading 35, Science 32), 1/148 class rank, 6 leadership positions in clubs, play golf, regional science fair 1st place, plays every year. I am applying from an out of state school, but considered in state for tuition. Also, I met the Calc Readiness with an 89 on the ALEKS.
Other people in my grade have been accepted to UT, but I have not even though my app was sent in way before theirs, so I am getting kind of worried.
If anyone can give me some feedback on whether I could get in or not, that would be great! Thanks!

They probably got into easier majors. I’m in same situation as you, haven’t gotten into ChemE yet. Here’s to good luck for the both of us.

My kido with very similar stats got into EE at Cockrell a week after he applied. Maybe it is less popular. He got an email right after he submitted his application that said he had not finished his application and had to write an honors essay. Once that was submitted he heard in 4 days. He has not heard back about the honors program yet. Is your application complete? I think I’ve heard that mechanical is more competitive. Good luck your stats are wonderful.

You earned great stats–congrats–and seem very organized. Have you logged in to your UT account to be sure they have received every required piece? If “yes,” then hang in there! The fact some students are admitted here and there makes the wait even more stressful, but you may not hear until the actual admission response date in late Feb.

See this from the Admission FAQ on the Be A Longhorn site:

Because the University uses a competitive, holistic review process, final admission decisions about most applicants can be made only after all applications are received. (See the information below about the timeline.)

The Office of Admissions delivers freshman summer/fall decisions by the end of February. Some transfer decisions cannot be made until we receive official transcripts of an applicant’s spring coursework, meaning that review of their application can’t begin until the spring semester is over and a transcript arrives.

Although some applicants feel as though they are less likely to be admitted as time goes on, that assumption is not necessarily true. Decisions for some of our most competitive majors are made later in the process simply because most decisions about such majors cannot be made until every application file is completed and reviewed.

Freshman Timeline
August 1: Summer/Fall Application becomes available
December 1, 2010 (and later): Application deadline for summer/fall applicants (October 1 for the spring application)
November - February: Individual review of complete applications happens; applicants notified as decisions are made
End of February: The date by which all freshman summer/fall applicants can expect to be notified of their final decision

Good luck!
