worried...

I am an admitted student and feel strongly about going to Vanderbilt. However, I am troubled my the lack of diversity both in terms of racial (i'm asian) but also socio-economical. Can anyone give me insight and explain more about Vanderbilt's student population???

Thanks in advance.

No, and we won't lose any sleep if you go somewhere else.

We have no problem filling the slots with people totally free of this silly worry.

Vanderbilt's class of 09 is 7% asian. This year, asian applications increased by 22%. None of my asian friends think they are "alone" here.

Although Vandy is known for having a fair share of rich kids, the excellent financial aid packages it awards ensures a large number of not-so-privileged students choose to matriculate. There are people here who are filthy rich and people here who would be considered poor.

To sum it up: don't worry about it.

VUAlum, I don't get what you're saying. I was merely expressing my concern and asking for guidance, not asking for you to respond so insensitively.

don't worry about him

... or her. Seriously though, accepted students, stop asking stupid questions and you will get better answers.

There are rich kids (you can spot them as they have the popped-up collars and $300 jeans that look no different thatn $40 dollars ones and ugs and prada bags and whatnot) and not-so-rich kids (everybody else). There are white people, latinos, blacks, and asians. Maybe minority ratios aren't as high as other schools, but considering where Vanderbilt has to come from (ie, all white until the 60s), I'd say the trends are good.

Race interaction could stand to improve, but as much a function of the students and where they came from as the pre-existing machination of the Vanderbubble culture. If you are a person you cherish a plethora of culture and ideas, you'll find all of that at Vanderbilt and you WON'T have to try all that hard to get it. But realize that there are folks out there who find comfort in what is familar and won't readily seek out things that are different.

Look, I won't pretend that the rich, white (and even black, hispanic, asian and jewish) culture that IS a part of Vanderbilt never gets annoying, but I suspect that if you like Vanderbilt as much as we do, you'll love it once you get there, warts and all.

My apologies VUAlum.

Also, to add a sidenote about what feenotype said, today I was walking to class and heard a girl (popped collar? I don't remember) who said "I was really disheartened yesterday...I spent three hours shopping for shoes to go with my formal dress and couldn't find ANY!" and I actually laughed out loud.

So, you'll find people whose biggest worries are finding shoes for the formal but you'll also find people who come from a family that makes under $50k a year, with the majority of people (of all races) falling into middle or upper middle class (as at most top private colleges).

VUAlum, maybe you have never faced discrimination, but for me, these concerns are real. Stop trivializing my problems.

Then go somewhere else if you're finding individual issues you can't overcome. Welcome to adulthood.

Or you could just (wo)man up, stop whining, join the family, and make it what you want it to be. Perhaps you'll make our wonderful university a little better. We've done quite all right for quite a while without you. There is no crime in Vandy's culture. It's no different than any other top school. High achieving kids typically come from high achieving parents. The color of these faces is more white than the population at large, but that doesn't mean anything all by itself. There is no class warfare or ethnic battle, on either a cold or hot front.

I say again, stop asking stupid questions or forcing us to accept a stupid premise and you will get better information.

VUAlum this is a thread to help ppl not to start a useless arguement. How about u take ur snobby rich ass somewhere else buddy

VUAlum,

what the f*** is wrong with you? if you dont have anything good to say, shut up and go somewhere else to lash out ur stupid anger. What are you so *ed off about? Racial issues are greatly concerned among minorities. Just because its not one of ur concerns, dont f think that it's trivial to everyone else.

If you represent the attitude of vanderbilt, then its not as diverse and accepting as most people say. Although I think you stand alone in ur f***ed up attitude.

veritasluxmea, I understand ur worries. I know asians who are currently at vanderbilt and they LOVE it. Experience is what you make of it. of course, there will be snobs and ignorant people (you've encountered one in this thread), but they are far more intelligent and cool people out there. You just have to find them.

Dont worry, ur will be fine :)
