Hey there, I’m just stopping by to ask a quick reference question to either all you former and current OSU alumni, or those who are future prospects like myself.

A few weeks agoi I completed my OSU application form and had all my items sent to the institution in hope they would reach before the Dec. 1’st deadline. My application was received on the 30th, as well as my ACT scores. Unfortunately, my transcript has did not reach them until yesterday. So this ultimately diminishes any chance I had of EA, and scholarship offers. Also, it now puts me in the pull of regular admissions, and my stats are not strong at all. As a matter of fact they’re only moderately decent. So my question is, are my chances still salvageable, or should I start planning to attend somewhere else next fall, here’s an overlook of my stats:

Rank: ^15%
Ethnicity: African American
Residency: Out-of-State (Illinois)
GPA: 3.2 (Filled with Honors, AP, and College Course classes)
ACT: 24/w Writing (11)

Intended Major: Communications

Activities:

Marching Band for 4 years as Trombonist, as well as a Drum Major
SICA Rank II in Trombone Performance
SICA All-Cast Awardee in Group Intepretation
Member of the Tech Clunb
Student Council Representative

Work Experience:

Public Library since end of Sophmore year

So what do you guys think? In addition I feel I wrote an extremely strong personal statement, so…I hope all goes well!

ManUtd20Ole, shouldn't our applications still be considered for their scholarship offers since they were in before the 1st? I registered on the 30th and sent everything first class mail, so I don't see any reason for them not to still consider us...

I'm actually depending on a scholarship to go to OSU, and I'd be mighty disappointed to loose a chance for consideration because my transcript wasn't processed fast enough....

As for PowerTrio, I'm not an adcom and don't pretend to know a thing about scores. Sorry. :-( From what I know, you should have a fine chance because the letter I received overviewing scholarships includes your ACT in the range, which means they consider it a desirable enough score. :-)

Trio, you still have a REALLY good chance of getting in. Your rank/ethnicity is a definite plus and your GPA/ACT score is around the middle range/slightly below the regular applicant pool. Even though your GPA is a slightly below average (which I think to be like 3.3; they don't release it), your rank demonstrates that you come from a good school and your courseload shows that you should do okay with college classes. I think OSU focuses more on transcript/tests than ecs, but those are strong as well.

On a side note, OSU does not have ed/ea decisions in the strictest term -- not sure if you knew that or not. Even though the school recommends you apply before December 1, it's not sort of early admission deadline, it's just for those scholarships you were talking about. A lot of scholarships are still available after Dec. 1, too, although they aren't quite as nice per se. Your stats are pretty strong for OSU (although OOS might make it a bit tougher), and you shouldn't worry about the applicant pool. Because OSU has rolling admissions, they fill up the class on a first come, first serve basis. A LOT of students haven't applied yet, so you're still in good standing.

There are several scholarships which you are only eligible for if you applied before December 1st (which means your application was fully complete, with transcripts, tests, app, so on). Two of them are if you are accepted to the honors program -- Provost and Maximus. The other honors program scholarship is still guaranteed even if you didn't apply before Dec. 1, but it's less $$. There are a couple of other assorted ones, but you'll have to check the OSU website to find out.

Should my kid be worried? The application was complete on 11/1. My kid had the ACT score sent a week or two later. 640V, 640M, 700W, 31 ACT, top 1/3 with a 3.65 (4.0+ GPA as a freshman, junior and as a senior so far...but sophomore year was below average). Has done well in AP classes and two University classes. Good recs and activities. Possible biology major. Out of state. Has been accepted to Penn State, State College and the University of Pittsburgh, but nothing from OSU.

The web site still shows "Evaluation." Does this indicate a problem?

Neonzeus, tell your kid not to worry. First of all, congrats on the schools so far.
Secondly, "Evaluation" is what it should say, until accepted of course. I spoke with TOSU and they are definitely swamped. Good luck and hope you hear soon.

yea mine said it wasn't completed till a couple days ago....but I'm pretty sure that my counselor postmarked it in the mail by December 1st.....am i still up for consideration for the honors program?

From my talks with the counselors, you are still in consideration for the honors program after Dec. 1st, but your application had to be fully completed by December 1st no matter what to be guaranteed for the scholarships with that deadline - with EVERYTHING in the system. This, of course, upsets me - everything I had was postmarked November 30th, but the system didn't complete my application until 12/12 as well. This means that I am certainly up for Honors, but my chances at the scholarships depend only on how many students apply with similar stats. We are certainly NOT promised anything due to the late reception of our materials (even if it isn't our fault - frustrating, I know!). That doesn't mean we won't get anything - we'll have to wait and see.

All of this talk of early applications with late reception is kind of upsetting. I'm considering an appeal to those at OSU because I'm really counting on a chance for those scholarships to even dream of affording the school, and I certainly completed my end of the bargain. C'est la vie. In the mean time, we'll just have to wait for our applications to change from Evaluation to Acceptance, right?

zac: my understanding is that more students than expected decided to attend OSU this fall, including honors and scholarship winners. Plus, they have had more than expected applications this year. As a result, they may be very strict on deadlines, GPA/ACT/SAT cutoffs, etc. Not saying you can't make your case, but it could be a numbers game.

I just wanted to thank everybody who posted their information here for me to look over. I am glad to announce that I received my acceptance desicion last night into the Columbus campus. So, no more worries from, and thank you all!

Well, postmarking something by November 30th won't make you eligible for the scholarships. They wanted it to arrive by December 1st - there's no way it could have, mailed the day before. Now, if you had mailed everything a week before the deadline, and the USPS lost your transcript, or if OSU took too long to get everything organized, that would not be your fault. But one day before the deadline is not enough.

It's true - last year's applicant pool was of higher (stats) quality than previous applicant pools. We have way more Honors students than usual, so they increased the minimum requirement to be in Honors and be invited to the Maximus. I'm sorry!

Yes! I plan on attending this year, also I actually qualified for the $15,800 scholarship due to my ACT scores. This is really fantastic, go Buckeyes!
