I'll admit I'm no academic star. I've got a 3.0 GPA at Cornell Engineering with decent extracurrics and work experience. It's just tough to find anything in this ultra-competitive environment. I've been going on my school's online career site almost every day and the opportunities just don't seem to be there. My school even cancelled an upcoming career fair due to lack of interest from employers.

I've even resorted to going through Monster and Craigslist, looking at stuff that's completely unrelated to what I wanna do. I've also applied to some REUs, even though I'm really not interested in research. I just wanna find something to do for the summer and I'm a little worried I won't at this point. What's a guy like me to do? I'm getting a little desperate.

I have to admit that Im a little surprised that a 3.0 GPA at Cornell cant find you a job. Try going through your resume again and making sure theres nothing wrong with it. Go to job fairs at all of the different colleges at Cornell, e.g the business school, etc., you will be surprised at how easily companies are impressed with engineering majors at business recruiting fairs. Then, if you still cant find anything try taking classes during the summer to get ahead. And finally, if all else fails, quit paying the high tuition at Cornell and come to Purdue.

Keep building your resume, I recommend undertaking a few unpaid/lowpaid/high paid internships with some noname/middlename/top flight companies. As you build experience, the doors the will open up dramatically. Your most fierce competition will have atleast 2-3-4 internships by junior summer. So if you want to remain competitive in this crappy environment, complete a few unpaid internships, do your work well, don't complain, buy your boss coffee and move on with a phenomenal reference and contact.

ahhh the Cornell engineering fair wasn't canceled due to lack of interest!! According to the Sun it was because of disorganization and miscommunication!! Maybe you can try to find out which companies were supposed to come and send them a resume...
