Worst Anti-Hooks

Who has the worst anti-hook?

I'm an uppermiddle class white jewish girl :)

Probably an upper middle Asian female pre med who plays piano.

Nope...

upper middle class asian male going for engineering.

White Anglo Saxon Protestant Male with no ECs.

Yeah but the WASP is probably a triple legacy.

I'm an Indian male from suburban NJ goin' into medicine.

do hispanics going into engineering get an extra hook

Hispanic anything is a really good hook--the population of Hispanics in the US is rising steadily but we're are vastly underrepresented in colleges.

I don't think that engineering would make a difference, just being Hispanic is enough.

You win pipinghot. Where are you applying?

A male international student from East Asia applying as a science major and needs financial aid is probably worst off.

white male from a large state with rich parents

Asian male engineer whose parents and grandparents are engineers

The rich/upper middle class thing has nothing to do with admissions as they won't know that unless you tell them.

So it's pretty much your gender, race, religion, and what you want to do.

BTW, if you are bi-racial, should you tell colleges? By father is Hispanic and mom is white. On the US Census I am "White, of Hispanic descent," but most colleges consider Hispanic to be a race. Should I put Hispanic or "Other" and explain that I'm biracial?

hmm .. well, if you look hispanic, you could pull off just putting hispanic (it's more of an asset for admissions). if you dont, i would put biracial.

loneranger, where are you from? Money reigns supreme at top US colleges, just look who's there.

Yeah, but colleges don't know your monetary status because of need-blind admissions.

The poor black kid from Watts and the rich white kid from Beverley Hills are just a black kid from Watts and a white kid from Beverley Hills. They usually can make inference based on ethnicity, geographic location, and high school attended, but a rich black kid would get the preference over a poor white kid because they wouldn't know the poor white kid is poor.

Nevertheless, the ability to afford college makes a huge difference in one's attendance there. My parents, for example, have capped me at $20k for them a year. If I can't get scholarships to cover the difference, I can't go to that school.

I'm an uppermiddle class white jewish girl

Me too. High five!

Your zip code, ECs, summer activities, jobs tell a school a lot about your socioeconomics. Colleges do research on the ultra wealthy to see if they have potential to give big. They are responsive to meetings with the very rich and their offspring. The poor are often flagged by HS counselors. Many poor URMs are already involved with programs like Prep for Prep, ABC and Questbridge and are well represented when applying.

The middle class is screwed. Most homeowners with decent but not high salaries can't afford the $45K colleges but colleges think they can.

white, uppermiddle class christian/of jewish descent.
girl. from the suburbs. not even at an expensive prep school. no huge legacies.
and i don't play sports.

i don't even know why i still go to high school. i'm not getting into college. =P

Anti-hook:

middle-class, asian, piano, science interest

(this is not me - but it would be a crummy situation...)
