White, female, upper class, scientific (agnostic) family.

wow! Now we only need someone posting this:

Hispanic, female, middle class, interested in Engineering.

LOL i am an indian male, going for engineering.

asian from suburban new jersey who loves the piano and calculus and whose parents hold managerial occupations and make 50,000-150,000 a year and have 3 kids.

White/asian upper middle class (well off enough to be deemed "boring" not so rich as to be a potential big donor) from an affluent suburb in the Boston-Washington corridor.

There were six kids from Scarsdale High in my college class. They were, God forbid, all white and affluent. They were also remarkably diverse in their interests, personalities and aspirations. But no, the Big Brothers who run admissions treat them with a broad brush and deem them "undiverse" in comparison to presumtively fascinating people who happen to be from another area of the country or be of a different race or ethnicity.

Why an English major from Montana is going to add something tothe colleeg environment that someone from Boston/NY/Wash won't...is a clue to me. Also why colleges need french horn players. Also why colleges place so much value on sports esp the non-revenue producing kind. (Yeah, I know. Atmosphere, etc. Also jocks are felt to make better alumni. Like a lot of things, that's said to be true in the absence of evidence. You'd have to do a controlled study of jocks vs nonjocks who were equally recruited and given early letters etc and see how devoted they wre) Or why we assume that diversity can be measured by such superficial things. It's really just sick PR/CYA stuff. The same sort of stucc major corporations use. Why shouldn't colleges be as mealy-mouthed.
Funny how European universities can largely do without this sort of holistic garbage. But...admissions now is what admissions committee functionaries say it si on any particular day. Holistic. Yeah, right.

British universities admit by major. They have also made great strides to attract public school applicants. As for doing without holistic admissions, it's because they don't need it. Applicants apply to far fewer universities and admit rates are higher, resulting in less emphasis on non-academic factors. MIT claims that 70% of its applicant pool is academically qualified for admission, but only 15% will be admitted. THAT is why other factors come into play in the US.

Considering the no. of Jewish students at the top universities (signifying an extremely high admit rate) with the exception of a few schools, I don't see how being Jewish is an "anti-hook."

there are a lot of upper middle/upper class jewish people compared to their percent of the whole population--we make up only 1.3 percent. its an anti hook because LOADS (probably almost all, imo) of jewish kids apply to college.

So explain how Jews make up 26% of the overall Ivy League student body (and at certain schools, nearly 40%), while Asians who comprise over 5% of the applicants, make up only 16% of the overall Ivy student body (Jews, in fact, outnumber WASPs at certain Ivy campuses)?

Sorry - but the nos. just don't compute.

suze, i'm goin' to the college of new jersey's seven year med program

Oh, excuse me, according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Jews it's up to 2.1% ..

that's exactly why jews are at a disadvantage--top colleges all strive for diverse student bodies and (obviously) none of them need more jews!

Actually, the Jewish pop. is disproportionately on the older side - Jews only make up about 1.5% of the applicant pool.

Your line of "logic" doesn't make any sense - Jews have the HIGHEST admit rate of any group (and one that is considerably higher than that for Asians).

Asians:
5% of applicants = 16% of student body (3x the % of applicants)

Jews:
14% of applicants = 26% of student body (barely 2x)

uppermiddle class white jewish girl from a public school in an affluent suburb in the northeast who wants to do theatre.
dammit.

I'd say hypothetically speaking
male, indian, going for engineering (preferably computer science or electrical engineering)

I'd say the absolute worst is international from india, needing aid, regardless of the program.

Uhh, Jews only make up 1.5% of the overall applicant pool to universities/colleges - so that would be 17x the % of applicants.

hmm. where do you get your numbers?

are you implying the jews (ORMs) are preferred over URMs?

Anyone with a felony
