So I'm taking AP Statistics this year and the teacher is probably the 2nd worst I've ever had.

He goes over some material and then tests on other material related to it that we have never gone over and is mentioned in the book maybe once if we are lucky. Everyone has horrible grades in the class and I just scored my lowest grade ever on a math test.

My question is, how can I teach myself and know more than I need to know for the tests just in case? Like which textbooks are best and which review books are best and which websites and which videos and which EVERYTHING?

I need to teach myself for tests that are probably harder than the AP exam. Any recommendations would be welcome. *I can order any book; money is not a problem.

I was in your exact same shoes about 4 years ago when I took AP Statistics as a senior. The class was a joke; the teacher who had been teaching AP Stat at my high school for years had just left the school the year before. That meant the department just had to throw AP Stat on any of the available math teachers. They chose a very young and inexperienced math teacher to teach the subject. She didn’t know anything about statistics or the AP exam. She had just been learning the stuff on her own the summer before the semester started. The class suffered miserably and there was no curve.

I managed to do fine in the class and scored a 4 on the AP exam, testing out of an introductory Stats course that is required for my major here at BYU. I borrowed the 3rd Edition REA: AP Statistics book from the library. It was a very excellent resource and helped me to learn everything that was on the exam on my own, without any help from the teacher. I walked into that exam extremely confident and was able to perform well because of the help from that review book. I would strongly recommend you do the same.

I’m using the same textbook as thelogicalzebra and I’m managing pretty well in that class. It’s very easy to follow and I basically just teach myself the chapters…the teacher is really no use, even though I think she is a pretty decent teacher. Just make sure to read all the examples, they comprise most of the chapter anyway.

Also, [AP Stats Monkey](www.apstatsmonkey.com) has notes and practice quizzes that you can use to supplement the textbook.

My ap stats class, using the same book as catchinginfinity, is fairly easy, but still pretty difficult. I’m taking precalc with it (only junior in non-honors precalc out of the 100+ students, all in honors precalc or senoirs in calc/ap calc, taking ap stats) and my grade right now is a B-, only because I failed one of the tests. AP Stats Monkey never helps, I take all of the practice exams on the website, get a hundred on all of them, walk in and take the exam and get a B, which I thought was much harder than the ap stats practice exam: it had so many analytical, almost opinionated multiple-choice questions, some of the questions had answers that were each at least 4 lines long. There were kids in ap calc bc who get bs on some of the tests! Our teacher is also on the board and helps write/grade the ap exams, so he’s a pretty good teacher. For me, going on the college board website and looking at old exams helps me the most, since our tests are mostly copy and pasted from older exams (but changed around a bit). It’s imperative that you memorize all of the definitions, so you can manipulate them for various analytic applications for the multiple choice. The short answer sections are much easier and can be mastered with a quick review. AP Stats is a much harder course than it looks like (much, much harder than ap enviro), and at my school all of the AP courses are weighted by 1.2. On amazon.com, the Barron’s AP Statistics, 7th Edition by Marty Sternstein (Feb 1, 2013) has a 4.9 star rating from 16 reviews, so that might be a good book. Hope you do better in class!

Ouch that sucks. If this makes you feel better, AP exams aren’t really that important. Are you sure you’ll even need the credit in college? The worst thing that happens is having to take statistics in college again. Other than that they don’t even ask how you score on the exams unless you’re trying to get credit. You don’t have to report a bad score. If your grade is really tanking, focus on getting that back up and don’t worry so much about the exam.
