Worst books that you have read

What are the worst books that you have been forced to read for your classes? The only book so far that has truly been unbearable for me is Lord of the Flies. The language was very convoluted and plot was all too bizarre. I had trouble keeping up towards the end. Honorable mentions go to Fahrenheit 451 and To Kill a Mockingbird.

You disliked Lord of the Flies and How to Kill a Mockingbird? Those two were among my favorites.

I hated Heart of Darkness. Most depressing book ever (once you finally follow the plot - I fell asleep so many times reading it).

I agree with Heart of Darkness. I also hated The Trial and The Prince.

Did I really say How to Kill a Mockingbird? That made me look uneducated… 8-}

@runner019 and @skieurope I agree, but will go further and say anything by Joseph Conrad. My college freshman required reading was Lord Jim–worst book ever! Or maybe I was just too young and uneducated to appreciate it.

I hated 1776. Narrated like a textbook.

I third Heart of Darkness. I loved TKM and Lord of the Flies though.

I can’t believe so many of you didn’t like Heart of Darkness! :open_mouth: I loved it.

I liked TKM. Lord of the Flies was eh. Honestly I didn’t like the Scarlet Letter.

Worst books I’ve read for school:
April Morning- I was young and I didn’t understand what was going on

Best books I’ve read for school:
To Kill a Mockingbird
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
West Side Story
The Pearl by John Steinbeck

And pretty much every other book I’ve read for school!

Jane Eyre was pretty bad, but We Have Always Lived in the Castle was just the worst

Fahrenheit 451, and the movie was actually 10x worse

I honestly think, if we were given more modern, interesting books, maybe not at a super accelerated level in high school, kids would continue to read after school. However, because in middle school and high school we launch into books teens can’t relate to on any levels what-so-ever, it ruins literature for so many students.

I liked Catcher in the Rye

The Alchemist. Best book ever.

What is with the hate for Fahrenheit 451? I really enjoyed Bradbury’s musings on society and found it to be quite genius. Perhaps it was his writing style that turned you guys off? It’s my favorite book I’ve read for school.

I don’t really remember the bad books I read.

I hate Atlas Shrugged

Anthem by Ayn Rand and Fahrenheit 451

I’ll probably take some fire for this but I could not bare reading Les Miserables. It was slllloooow and took forever for my English class to get through it. Other than that, I don’t think I’ve read many terrible books throughout school. My favorites (digressing, but whatever) include the Magic Tree House series (3rd grade), The Book Thief (7th grade), The Things They Carried (12th grade), and Fahrenheit 451 (9th grade).

The Things They Carried was the weirdestly narrated book ever.

ahah @mrnephew‌ I really liked it, and the whole playing with time made it seem better to me :)

I forgot to put The Kite Runner as one of the books I loved, read that in 10th grade I think…
