And in Spring, a shop owner was murdered across the street from campus.
Rogers Park is a dumpy area, but N. Sheridan & Broadway are very active streets 22 hours of the day and police have a significant presence in the area. If you stay south of the Morse stop and walk in a group, you'll be safe.
It's when you're on campus, being harassed by people at the rehab clinic or tracked by cars while walking back from the library or cafe alone at 2am, that it can get really uncomfortable.

Richmond, Virginia used to be the murder capitol of the country

They've cleaned up Richmond. There's actually art places and parks you want to visit. But the city is spaced out very widely and roads can lead on the bad spots that exist in any city. Re: discussion, suburban URichmond and downtown VCU were never associated with the bad areas though.

Yeah its has got a lot better. There are just places you want to avoid

With the amount of drugs at colleges wouldn't you see drug deals going down at any campus? It also sounds like some people (particularly those saying NYU isn't safe) want to continue with their sheltered, suburban lives. College is a time to expand, but if you want to continue living a sheltered life then by no means attend a school in the city. Yeah, there are drug deals on campuses. Guess what, people also use drugs! I know, crazy right?

"we spent quite a while in Philly and explored the area around Penn extensively. While I was on a campus tour with my mom, my dad was off exploring and driving around to check places out such as an area where one of our family friends lives off campus (this same friend was mugged in broad daylight right outside of fisher bennet hall on walnut street...BROAD DAYLIGHT/by 2 innocent looking girls!!!) and while exploring he said he saw what appeared to be a drug deal... I love Penns actual campus esp. the campus green, quad, and locust walk. but I dont feel as comfortable in UCity and having to live there b/c housing's not guaranteed all 4 yrs. I'd honestly feel safer at NYU even though its wayy more urban just b/c there are SO MANY people and students around all the time that it would be harder to be mugged in broad daylight like my friend was b/c UCity isn;t always as crowded w/ so many people (witnesses) which was what happened in her case....thats all I meant. I've known 2 people who were both mugged during the day at UPenn and just dont like Philly that much...thats all and Im sure some people love it still and have not had any bad experiences..sure people can get mugged in any big city, but usually this doesnt happen in broad daylight like in a crowded street around Washington Square Park at NYU b/c there are tons of people around walking on the sidewalks....at UPenn there can be lulls in traffic and pedestrians, which is how my 2 friends were mugged at daytime while still being cautious..."

I'm pretty sure Philadelphia has one of the largest, if not the largest, student population.

but seriously...you need to grow and realize life isn't completely a safe haven for you. the chances of being mugged in Philly in broad day light around a lot of people is unlikely. my cousin goes to Temple.. loves it. My neighbor goes to Drexel.. loves it. Kids from my school would die to go to UPenn. You're just being ridiculous. Drug deals.. oh no! all you have to do is not look at them and just ignore them and they will ignore you.

I was doing this volunteer trip in Kensington (Philly) and one of the houses we had to visit smelled of weed. The owner had just made a deal while we were waiting in his house. that's just how people want to live. just don't intrude in their business. Philly is a great city. know your bounderies and always try to walk with others, don't stand out, and just be cautious and you'll be fine.

I've been to Philly and loved it. You just have to be street smart when traveling around. Cities arent as bad as people make them out to be, you just hear reports of people being hurt and think its all bad.

Yeah, if Philly is as bad as some of you people think, do us all a favor, and stay inside your suburban bubbles. Thanks.

Saint Louis University is definately unsafe. If you barely step outside of the campus, you better be prepared to defend yourself.

Nothing is worst than West Lafayette, Indiana.
