Worst situation in my life - help urgently

I have never been SO DEEP in poo in my life before. I am screwed beyond belief.

If you don't want to read all of this, look at the letter down below.

So,
I am a senior year student and just took my midterms this week. I have not yet been accepted to my top college, who has not responded to be for over 3 months, so something is up with them and me. They probably want to see my semester grades.

Specifically, I just took my AP Physics midterm yesterday. I usually get 60-70's on the regular tests we take.

This midterm was composed of 60 multiple choice and two short answer questions. It was specifically the multiple choice questions from the 2006 AP exam. I take the exam and finish with confidence, and relax peacefully the rest of the day.

WORST DAY OF MY LIFE
The next day, which is today, I sit down to take my english midterm. My english teacher comes in, and hands me a letter.

Its a very average, plain white letter, with just two names on it.
On the top left corner, it is my physics teacher's name in pen. In the center of the envelope is my name.
Knowing that has to be bad, I open it up and read the following:

Dear (My first and Last name),

It is clear that on the AP physics Mid-term exam, you and (Friend sitting next to me) turned in essentially the same exam. I recognize that we sometimes make mistakes in life, so I will give you two options to think about.

Option 1: Retake the exam and receive 75% credit. Apologize to me for turning in work that was not your own. Receive a 4 for the citizenship grade. I will forget that this ever happened.

Option 2: Both you and (Friend) will have to retake the exam. If you are not able to produce substantially the same performance, but (friend) is, it will be clear who copied whose paper. If it is found that you copied from (friend), you will receive a 0 for the exam, a 5 for your citizenship grade, and I will have to go through the prescribed academic integrity process.

Please think this over carefully.

Sincerely,

(Signature of Physics teacher)

(Physics teacher)

My life just sunk down the drain, and just when I was starting my very wordy english exam.

So after trying to calm myself down, I process all of this in my head.
-First, I need to get an 75 on this midterm to get a B for the semester, which is really important. Great.

-Second, there is only one more day of exams, which is tomorrow. I have AP econ and AP calc, so I would have to retake the physics midterm after both exams during our makeup period. My brain will be mush. That means I will have to skip my first exam, take the physics midterm first, and take the skipped one during our makeup period.

-I not only have to study for these two subjects TODAY, but I also have to review PHYSICS, because I completely wiped my brain clean of physics.

So lets say that I did not cheat. That would mean that I would have to go up to him and tell him I didn't cheat. He would either then take out both tests to compare, and show me that they are similar, or just tell me to pick option 2 to prove that I didn't cheat.

The problem with this is that both tests have to be similar, or he would not have accused me of anything.
However, this was a multiple choice test, and it was the same for everything (I heard). All of these tests would be the same and have the same answers.
You then can conclude from this that he was bias against my very high test grade because of my previously low grades. He then probably looked at my friends, who was sitting next to me, and concluded that i cheated off of him (he get's B's and A's).
If I tell him this logic, and he somehow proves that I cheated on the midterm because of the comparisons/simulations between the two tests, he would get me in A LOT of trouble.
Say goodbye to my future.

Let's say I did cheat.

The problem with option 1 is that I need a 75 on the test or I can't get a B for the quarter, which will really screw me over when I send my semester grades to colleges.

The second option is even more risky, as in I can either succeed or totally fail.

Both options force me to study again, leaving me thinking that if I study A LOT (as in now until 10), I can get a high score, or I can take my chances and take option 1 and try to get a 100....to get a 75

I need to serious advice for this. I can't say that I didn't cheat because he has too many things to prove it, even though they are all bias. However, I didn't cheat, and I do not want to push this to the point where I get suspended for academic integrity; This would ruin absolutely everything in my life....college down the drain, parents would KILL me, loss of respect, everything I have would go bye bye. If I tell him I didn't cheat, and he shows that my test and my friend's test are similar (even though they have to be similar), there is no arguing about it, and he would probably get me in trouble.

In addition to all of this, I have two midterms tomorrow, I have to make up two other standard tests that I missed for math, plus do some work for econ, all for tomorrow.
Three of the hardest subjects in the school, and I have to take all of their midterms tomorrow.

HELP ME, GIVE ME SOME SERIOUS ADVICE

You state:
“This midterm was composed of 60 multiple choice and two short answer questions. It was specifically the multiple choice questions from the 2006 AP exam.”

Did you study off the 2006 exam? Did you go over it in class before the test? How about the essays? how similar to your friends.

If you honestly did not cheat, I would speak with your parents and meet with the Physics professor. Did other student in the class write similar essays. No way to cheat off others sitting around the room. Did you and “friend” study together at all?

Get some guidance form your parents, possibly guidance counselor. Speak to teacher with someone else (adult) with you for support.

Good luck.

First off: If you did cheat, your teacher is being very kind.

Second: You really have four options, I think. You can probably accept a 0 for the exam if you don’t want to take it again and aren’t willing to bring the cheating problem to your school administrators. You can challenge the accusation and bring it to your school administrators. You can take option 1. Or you and your friend can both take it over again, per option 2.

What you do is totally up to you. If I were you and I had cheated on the exam, I would take option 1. If I was your friend and you told me you had cheated off of my exam, no way in heck would I take an exam over again per option 2.

Take it over again. Not getting a B isn’t going to screw your life up. Stop freaking out.

I would say challenge the teacher if you didn’t cheat. It seems to me he is just accusing you people you usually don’t do as well. I would say you kinda got unlucky that the answers were similar and you were next to eachother. But when you score High on an exam most kids get the same few wrong. Talk to your parents definitely get them on your side and maybe try talking to another teacher or guidance counselor. If I did well on my midterm and didn’t cheat I would try to do whatever I could to keep the grade without having to retake. Goodluck I hope everything works out

My senior year of high school I was accused of cheating on an exam. The offer you are receiving is very generous. I would talk to your instructor about the exam. Ask for evidence to be presented to you. Then make a decision based on a greater knowledge of where you stand.

Obviously the solution to this is to cheat AGAIN. That way you can say, “Hey, we did equally as well AGAIN.”

Hi there,
OKAY my advice is pretty unbiased and is what I think you should take:
-First off, talk to your parents, tell them your story and have them speak with your physics teacher one-on-one after school one day.
-If you cannot prove your innocence to them, then simply go with OPTION TWO. Dude, i know that you hate studying, but just suck it up and pull yourself up by your shoulders and study again. you’ve done it before, so it won’t be so hard and you already know what’s on the exam. Get over it.
OPTION one is horrible, no matter which way you look at it cuz u cannot get higher than a 75, which sucks. option two still gives you the opportunity to be just as successful as the first time around. it’s not your fault you were accused of cheating–hell, it was probably your friend who cheated off of you.

good luck :)

All I have to say that hasn’t been covered yet is, I wish I had your life if this is the worst situation you’ve ever been in.

Also, you never actually said you didn’t cheat, even on an internet forum…

OP stated in the other thread that he had been cheating, and that he mostly only got 60s and 70s. A 75 is a very, very generous grade, especially considering it’s likely obvious that he cheated. He probably wouldn’t be able to get a 75 on a re-test.

I’m surprised he’s even asking this question.

^“Likely obvious that he cheated” sorry, no. Unless the short answer questions are virtually identical the teacher has no reason to accuse him of cheating. If he studied harder this time around that’s a perfectly legitimate reason for having higher grades. Take it from a college student kid, fight this thing. Do what others are suggesting, talk to your parents, talk to another teacher, talk to the Physics teacher and ask for more proof. Namely: Talk to him with your parents present, more than one witness to back it up.

Firstly I would fight for my innocence by meeting with the teacher and having an honest talk with him, or going to the administration. If that doesn’t work, I would definitely go with Option 2 and retake the whole thing. That way if you get a good score you can sh1t on your teacher’s face.

He said that all the tests and short answer stuff was identical. So, yes. It was likely obvious. Did you read the other thread?
OP only made this thread because in that thread he revealed that basically, he’s an idiot, and everyone criticized him for being an idiot. And what he really wants to hear is that ohhh the teacher is just so unjust for catching him cheating and he should protest it! He doesn’t want genuine answers, just for people to side with him.

well…its pretty obvious you did cheat…as this whole situation is stressing you out. If you really didn’t cheat, then why would it be giving you so much stress? Just simply tell the teacher you really didn’t cheat or re take it and the person who really cheated will do worse than you. Honestly if you really cheated you deserve to not get a B, or even a C. You want some advice? You should just spit it out, and come out with it and say that you cheated. Have some integrity and just admit it. The teacher might even give you some bonus points for maning up and admiting it.

Go to the administration. Challenge it. Challenge hard. Retake to show you know the material.

Do not let your teacher assume you guilty before all the facts are shown.

@twistnswif

You’re cheating, you’ve cheated on everything you’ve ever done. It doesn’t matter that you have or haven’t, I say you have, I sit in judgement of you and I control your very future with my opinions. Even if you didn’t cheat, I don’t believe you, you’re just some kid. Yeaahhhh there’s no WAY that wouldn’t stress anybody out /sarcasm

@wanton No, I haven’t read the other thread, that thread is not relevant. Look, just because he’s cheated before doesn’t mean he cheated on this exam, it doesn’t look GOOD for him but this is America where we’re innocent until proven guilty, not some authoritarian country where we’re guilty until proven… OH THIS BOOK IS TOO HARD, GUILTY GUILTY GUILTY.

In the other thread, he said he cheated on this exam…

^NBrink, Good catch!

The OP admitted he cheated. Let him figure out how to handle the consequences of his actions.

How is that thread not relevant? He’s asking THE EXACT SAME QUESTION. This is the same situation. Stop talking out of your ass.

Yes, the OP admitted he cheated on the other thread.

This is easy, take option A. Your teacher is being very generous. There are many reasons for cheating, I don’t know what yours were. I know of another case where someone got caught cheating and the outcome was far worse.

Admit what you did and learn from this mistake, as in don’t do it again. Your teacher gave you a way out, I would suggest you take it.
