Worst sleeping schedule!

Any other college students out there with sleeping problems?! It gets so bad during the semesters. I just can't sleep early and sometimes don't get to bed until at like 3-4 AM on an 8 AM class day. Sometimes, I just pull an all-nighter if I get too worked up over an exam. I have all 8 AM classes this upcoming semester, which kills me...literally.

If you can’t change your schedule to accommodate your sleeping patterns then maybe your only other option would be meds.

Nyquil…

Do you work out? I sleep much better on days that I work out. Or rather, I run out of energy sooner.

All you need is 4 hours of sleep and they don’t have to be consecutive (as my Drill Sargent would say). I usually go to sleep around 2am and have to wake up early for morning pt for ROTC a couple days a week. After my morning classes I take a nap and I’m good for the rest of the day. All you need is discipline.

I suggest that you don’t take 8am classes. You can change your eating habits/diet/caffiene intake. NyQuil is great for adjusting your sleeping habits. If that doesn’t work you can remove excess energy by working out which is good for you anyways and/or reducing stress by masturbating before bed.

sometimes the classes you need are only at 8am.

I don’t sleep for a long period of time at any one time, but I take an afternoon nap and sleep for about 3 hours at ‘night time’. I take the bus at 6am to commute.

“All you need is 4 hours of sleep and they don’t have to be consecutive”

Everyone’s bodies are different. I can do fine on 7 hours of sleep but some people need 9.

I have sleep problems sometimes but they’re usually linked to stress. Gotta take it down a couple notches is all. Now, during breaks I get into this weird habit of waking up around 7:30AM every morning.

Yeah, if I’m not in bed by midnight, I’ll probably be up until 4 to 5. Luckily the earliest I had to wake up was 10:40 twice a week, the rest was 12:30, so I got enough sleep, though it wasn’t desirable by any account. This upcoming quarter I may have a 9 am class and I’m getting nervous.

Yeah, I know how that is. Smoke weed, dude. Always works for me :)

It took me half-way through college to realize that I should prioritize sleep over school work or my social life or favorite TV show. Staying up late to finish an assignment might seem like a good idea at the moment, but it will take a toll on my productivity for the rest of the week. I tend to get trapped in a feedback loop of staying up late, having difficulty concentrating because I am tired (or on a caffeine high), and staying up late again to finish work I didn’t get done during the day.

I learned to plan my work ahead of time, and I also found out that my professors won’t bite me if I ask for a one-day extension.

I haven’t been getting more than 4 hours of sleep a night in the past three weeks and it’s driving me nuts. When I was younger and this would happen, I would just take a Benydryl (sp?) but that’s not really working anymore. NyQuil might work though…

I would never stay up past 2 working on an assignment if I needed to be up before 10/11. MY roommate would be up until 3 or 4 AM working on a speech for a 101 comm class (only a higher power could know how in the heck that’s possible) when she had an 8am and looked at me like I grew a second head when I said I’d never pull an all nighter because I’d be useless the next morning. Whenever I would stay up too late on days that I had an 8am, my eyes just hurt in class constantly. The white of the lights and the wall and the powerpoint slides… I felt like I had a hangover!

…which is why my earliest class this semester is at 10am MWF (which is still too early for my taste).

I pretty much go on runs like every day (45 min. - 60 min.) and I smoke weed, too lol. But I’m holding back on the chronic since that actually distracts me from school work. I’m limiting pot to breaks or parties. The problem is that I work out at night. I like working out when the gyms pretty empty or just quiet; it’s just easier for me for some weird reason. Pretty much all the classes I need start at 8 or 9, unfortunately.

I’m like you. I’m pretty much nocturnal. What I found that helped a lot is just don’t even try to have a sleep schedule anymore because stressing out about not being on a normal schedule keeps me up even more. Also, don’t workout at night because that keeps you up too. I’m guilty of working out at 11pm for the same reasons as you and find I don’t go to sleep until 3am when I do.

But honestly, just sleep when you can/feel like it. My campus job requires me to work 4am-8am shifts or 12am-4am. Even before that, I’d go to sleep at 9 if I was tired, and then wake up at 3am to do work. Sometimes I’m up all night, then go to sleep at noon and wake up at 11pm and then go back to sleep at 7am. Idk, maybe I’m weird like that but I’ve learned to let it go.

Just embrace your nocturna-lness and nap during the day. Sleep in 3 hours intervals and you’ll be golden. Either nap for 3 hours at a time or sleep 6 or 9 straight. 3 hours is how long you need for a full REM cycle because when you wake up and feel tired it’s because you woke up in the middle of a REM cycle.

Ahahah, I had a terrible terrible sleep schedule this semester. I used to go to bed at like 2-4, and wake up in time for 10/11 am classes (yep, eat your hearts out :D). But now I have 9am classes MWF, so I def want to bring it back on track. I’m aiming for 7am-12/1am ish…

Yeah, eventually I just give up because I dread thinking about having to spend so much time trying to fall asleep. So sometimes I just avoid that and stay up until I finally feel like sleeping. Last semester I kind of forgot about sleeping altogether, and I would find myself staying awake for days at a time to finish assignments. It was definitely an insane time. Honestly even though I can eventually manage living life as an insomniac, I just get frustrated because I wish I could keep the same sleep schedule as everyone else.

Nothing seems to help me. Not giving up caffeine, working out, or changing lifestyle habits. It’s really frustrating, but I feel bad for complaining because I know everyone has sleeping problems at some point. I just hope this can go away once I graduate. I’d like to have a professional job with decent work hours and not depend on working the night shift because that’s the only time I have energy, lol.

I generally go to sleep around 4-5 am and wake up at 3/4 in the afternoon. I don’t know why I need so much sleep or why I can’t get to sleep at a more reasonable time (even if I get up early), but it’s pretty lame.

If you can’t sleep at night, schedule your classes and such so that you can take periodic naps during the day. It’s not ideal, but if you can’t take all night classes (I’m able to take all night except one, which is at 11), it may be the best you can do.

It might also be hindering you to workout so late at night. Try early afternoon, if you can.
