to make us feel a little better,
who do you know with the worst stats/EC's who got into amazing schools including this one... should be interesting if anyone knows people like this.

SAT - 1860
GPA - 3.12
SAT II - (math, bio, history) 680, 720, 540
Sports - none
Ec's - founded a club in school that manged to get 90 odd members. However the club didn't do very much..just kinda had a meeting each week where it was like "hey guys, how was your week?"
Essays/recs - average at best. I took a look at the essays after, they were meh.
other - got suspended once for being caught smoking pot
hooks - daddy donated $2k to each school in the kid's soph. year

Schools applied:

all ivies, UC's, duke

Accepted:
Cornell, UCLA

Me:
GPA: 8.2/10 (frankly below average where I went to school. I just didn't work)
SAT I: 1550/1600 (OK not that bad, but so is everyone else's SAT I)
SAT II: Math IIC 740, USH 680, Lit 670
EC: practically nonexistent my senior year, was busy doing other stuff. EC in previous years were funky.
Bland recs (different system, teachers didn't know what recs are supposed to be like).
Essay sort of shallow after you read other people's essays.
Intel student, annual contribution close to zero, which makes it so much harder for non-need-blind schools.
No hooks, plenty of anti-hooks.

Got in: Amherst, FREAKING HUGE FULL RIDE MAN. I'm not paying a cent and they're even giving me money. Amherst isn't even need-blind. Ehh...

In all honesty, my stats arent that bad, but they aren't phenominal

SAT: 2070, 750 CR, 610 Math(yes, i know), 710 Writing
SAT II: US History 620, Bio M 570, Lit 550
GPA: 3.8/4.0(school doesn't weight, but I take a very hard courseload, all honors/APs except for math, and im taking an AP math class this year)
My EC's were my highlight, I'm not going to list them out, but they were pretty damn good(I didn't cure cancer, but I've done quite a bit)
My recs were phenominal(one of my teacher's said that I should be walking on water after the rec he wrote)

Got in: Carleton College

So, my GPA/SAT were so-so, but I'm still going to one of the best liberal arts schools in the country....yay

nice- I like the 1st one the best though
I hate spoiled rich kids.. but it's funny

carleton's not even close to being hard to get in..from my school, people got into carleton with the following GPA range
3.4+ 2 out of 2
3.3-3.4 2 out of 2
3.1-3.3 1 out of 1
3.0-3.1 1 out of 1
2.7-3.0 1 out of 3
2.5+ 0 out of 1

total: 7 out of 10
general trend: tier 2 students apply

My daughter's friend flunked Spanish and still got into Merrimack in MA.

my boyfriend had mostly c's his entire high school career, then got straight a's senior fall, and he got into all the schools he applied to (most of them werent that selective, but still), including merrimack

What high school do you attend? It would be highly unusual for Carleton to take 7 out of 10 applicants from a single high school early decision. But if in fact they are accepting students with GPAs lower than in the past, well, good for Carleton. I applaud a school looking for something other than test scores and GPAs.

I have a friend who got into Stanford with two Ds.

that's not early decision..that's the statistic for last year...it ended up that only 1 out of the 7 chose to go..but i go to hotchkiss

and carleton's statistic is always like that i hv seen the stats page for last 5 years

my gpa is amazing. like a 3.8 out of 4.0 or a 4.54 weighted

but my sat the first time was a 1090/1600 second time it was a 1160/1600
act was a 25.
i got into a school with an average sat of 1285 and average act of 28.

i'm sure my gpa got me in, sadly i'm probably not gonna get any merit money thanks to those stupid sats, but still that's pretty good for a school that is getting really selective- i think their admit rate is like in the high 40%.

Carleton's acceptance rate was 30% last year, I would be honestly quite surprised if you aren't completly making up those numbers...

Either way, it's the sixth best liberal arts school in the nation, so suck it!

spaceball519:
his school hotchkiss is one of the top 10 private schools in the nation, along side with phillips andover, exeter, SPS, choate and those schools, their mean SAT is 1400 and 25% of the grads go to ivy league, the next 50% go to top 25 colleges, so his numbers definitely arent made up
but it's pretty dumb to use the numbers from such a school as a basis of saying low stats geting into good schools becoz those low stats meant nothing...a 3.0 kid from hotchkiss can easily make it to top 5% in a normal school

My friend:
Boston ED (well not as amazing as HYP but yeah..)
SAT: 1620
SAT2: 590, 550
Rank: top 40%
ECs: no clubs
Recs: 5 sentences per subject teacher (2 recs)
Hook: REGIONALLY ranked in golf - doesnt even spend much time on it though (2 hrs/week)

He says it's a miracle.

Boston U or Boston College?

Well I do have pretty good stats, but I've made mistakes! (i am human after all)
1. 580 on SAT II bio. Yeah.
2. 10th grade psat-180
3. D+ on AP physics test last year

but i'm going to Duke!!!

^----- Shouldn't count. Only the SATII goes for admission, and that is definitely secondary.
