Worth a look

for anyone interested is the August issue of Strings. The annual list of schools and programs is included, as well as a couple of articles worth reading on audition prep and tips, and an article on instrument insurance.

For those thinking of a strings concentration in the quartet rep, there's a new(?) full ride 4 year scholarship being offered to 4 incoming freshmen (highlighted as a full page ad in the referenced issue). The Stamps String Quartet Scholarship, under the coaching of the Bergonzi String Quartet, the QIR in residence at Frost since the early '90's. I glanced quickly at the Frost site, and found no posted info specifically. I have no idea if they are looking more for preformed ensembles, or 4 unaffiliated incoming students.

Those interested should contact Frost directly.

Again, it's posted as info, not a plug for either the mag, Frost or Bergonzi.

For Fall 2012, the scholarship will be available for a Brass Quintet

They are not looking for pre-formed ensembles; they are looking at unaffiliated incoming students. During my daughter’s audition this year (for Fall 2011), there were teachers from 2 different instruments present. It could be just their general audition policy, but we assumed it was because there were evaluating for the Woodwind Quintet.
