Worth A Retake?

I took the ACT on April 9th and scored a composite 31, with a 33 English, 31 Math, 30 Reading, and 31 Science. I am a sophomore and thinking of applying to University of Michigan, Michigan State University, University of Illinois, and University of Virginia. I live in Michigan. Is a retake worth it?

I’d definitely have my kids retake it. For one, some colleges prefer to see a test taken junior year. For two, while a 31 is good and will likely get you accepted to some places, it’s certainly not top of the top and wouldn’t be as competitive for top scholarships (if money is an issue). You’re looking at competitive schools.

A 31 is a good score for a sophomore - congratulations! But I suspect you can do better next year.

Should add… a 31 is also a great score for the majority of juniors or seniors, but I still say if it’s a sophomore score, retake it to see how much better you can do a second time around - unless one is planning on going to a non-competitive school and doesn’t need any sort of finances. Scores/retakes are based on the person and the situation IMO. In this case I would recommend it. In other cases I probably wouldn’t.
